A quick check shows no notice was paid by any newspaper in 1953,
the year of the supposed first World Contact Day. The first
mention I find is in a promotion of an album by the rock duo
The Carpenters in 1977.

As for World UFO Day, it falls between Canada Day and Independence
Day because that week was the peak of the first flying saucer
frenzy -- in North America -- in 1947.

That actually makes sense. The Carpenters had a decent hit
titled "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft", which is a
cover version of a song by the band Klaatu. Klaatu took the
title from the first line of the telepathic message that the
participants of World Contact Day are to send into space.

With more scrutiny I do indeed find a 1976 mention in the Fort Worth
Star-Telegram of World Contact Day in an item about the release
of the album by the group Klaatu, titled "Klaatu."

Here things get weird. Wikipedia says that World Contact Day
originated in March, 1953 when the International Flying Saucer
Bureau "sent a bulletin to all its members urging them to
participate in an experiment termed 'World Contact Day'..."
Searching in the newspaper database on the organization's name,
I do indeed find news items in 1953 about the organization
itself, but nothing about World Contact Day. Instead, the items,
in various U.S. papers, take note new chapters of the organization.
Although the organization is said to be located in Bridgeport,
Conn., the earliest items about it, from Feb. 1953, are in British
and Canadian newspapers.

Considering when it was posted, it might had been a reference to all the
fireworks that are set off on July 4th. Up to several years ago, when
the local city outlawed private use of fireworks, I was using the term
"the bombardment" to describe evenings in my neighborhood on July 4th.

Baen Free Radio Hour for August 4th (so most recent version) is a panel discussion on the UFO/UAP sightings such as the "tic tac" sightings. Partly based on what I have heard there my own thoughts are:

1) I don't believe that we have alien technology derived from UFOs - I think the step change in technology could not be hidden while educating enough people to make use of the technology - and if we had the technology it would be too beneficial to the general economy to keep secret. Even national security would get a higher benefit from a large increase in GDP than from a few wonder-weapons too secret to be used except in dire need.

2) I don't think the sightings are of piloted or unpiloted vehicles designed in secret by humans, e.g. USAF; I think their manoeuvres are too drastic, and they would produce far more atmospheric heating than has been observed..

3) Assuming the sightings are not entirely human error and misinterpretation, they could perhaps be the result of a technology specifically designed to confuse and jam sensors, including something capable of generating optical illusions in the open air. The military application of this would be as an alternative to, or a complement to, stealth technology.
