I've read _Timescape_ but at this point don't remember anything
about it. Benford never seems to have done much for me.

There was a short story where somebody traveled back in time to
prevent Hitler's assassination in a desperate attempt to ward off...
WWII going nuclear, I think? Somehow I think it was by S. Andrew
Swann, but I don't remember where I read it and I can't find it
now. Anyway, that was a slightly different take on "careful what
you wish for".

Perhaps you are remembering James P. Hogan's _The Proteus Operation_?

I have read the "Operation Time Search" and "Timescape".

And yes, there are hundreds if not thousands of time travel books.
Starting with the great "The Time Machine" by H. G. Wells first
published in 1895.

Time travel, except in an immutable continuum, sets up truly nasty moral issues simply by being possible. Poul Anderson explored some of them in his _Time Patrol_ stories. Frank Herbert addressed others in his _Dune_ stories. (Yeah, physical time travel is not available in _Dune_, but the precognitive powers of the characters open up many of the same moral quandaries).
