Pearls Before Swine: The Spotify Generation
https://www.gocomics.com/pearlsbeforeswine/2023/08/27

I've bought a few hundred albums over the years. And ripped half of
them for my truck. The latest was the Linda Ronstadt - Greatest Hits I
and II album.

Somebody must have done this joke last century, only using Napster
instead of Spotify.

I bought parts from Radio Shack in the late 60s/early 70s so I could
build a build a switch to turn my paused mono cassette tape recorder
on and off. I also had a mono patch cord attached to my radio. That,
let me create what later became known as "mix tapes" of my favorite
songs of the day.

By the end of the 7th decade.........

Off the radio I get constant flow
Hit it, pause it, record and play
Turn it, rewind and rub it away

I turned into the guy who bought vinyl records, recorded them, playing them
very few times, and listening to my cassettes much more often than not.

When I wound up having to sell almost all my comics, books, CDs and LPs
in order to raise cash, about 15 years ago, the used record shops gave me very
good prices for my vinyl. I had some rarities that were in excellent shape.

I still miss my blue vinyl import of _My Aim Is True_ by Elvis Costello.

The irony, of course, being that an album 'bought' on iTunes uses a very
odd, weakened meaning of 'bought'.

After hearing a cover of this song in which the singer claimed it was her favorite song about Napster, I felt guilty and bought a bunch of CDs including ones by the musicians involved here.

Not really. iTunes doesn't use DRM on its audio files any more, so you
can get the lossless files and keep them or burn them to CD if you like
on most cases.

Does Apple do lossless now? That's very interesting.

Although, in my opinion, the only way to buy music these days is to buy
vinyl with a download code. You get a nice piece of art, and don't have
to rip it yourself. It seems like the age of piracy showed record
companies how to be somewhat consumer friendly.

Hopefully the same will happen for the television industry.

Besides vinyl, there's been a little resurgence in cassettes. The
problem there is it's difficult to get a decent player. Vintage ones
are a crapshoot, frequently requiring repairs or maintenance to work
well. New ones are basically all use the same cheap tape drive that's
the last one being made.

I follow a YouTube channel, Tech Moan, which is a British guy
discussing and looking at old tech. He's acquired several new boomboxes
and desktop cassette players, and they are usually pretty bad.

https://www.youtube.com/@Techmoan

The oldest tech he's shown came when a group released their album on
Edison cylinder as a giveaway item. Finding a player that would handle
that model (there's more than one type of cylinder) and actually work
was a challenge.

The public library still stocks CDs.

A couple of years ago I went to Costco to get a new DVD/BR player.

They no longer stock them. Did find one in a Target.
