My question:

Is anyone else finding that Google is changing one's preferred username
for a group one subscribes to to bthe name of the group or to one's
email address?

I've gone into _My membership settings_ to switch the usename back,
but that fix doesn't always seem to take.

i have seen some other users' posts in other groups show the effect
of this a username that looks like _alt.foo.bar_ .

I know, I know - "get a real newsreader." I have my reasons for sticking
with GG.

I use GG, have done for 20+ years, and haven't noticed that problem. I *think* I'm still appearing as Moriarty in the headers. Maybe that's because I've never bothered to tell GG my actual name.

I’ve noticed that problem for others recently as well,
but not myself yet since I rarely post via google groups
(generally only when Eternal September is down,
or when I am housesitting, or when I want to post
to talk.origins, which doesn’t accept posts from
Eternal September unless you are on a whitelist).

They are not that easily fooled. (They will have read Dr Ignatious.)

A "moderated", supervised, Usenet newsgroup
could do that. Posts are diverted and examined
before they are published, and they can be altered
as well. Possibly automatically, possibly by mistake.
The case that I know of is talk.origins, mainly to
stop spam. A group could have a policy on user
names (no spoilers e.g. "Voldemort's brother")
or, as I say, by mistake.

As for Google's own "Groups" which are not on
Usenet - I don't know what's possible there.
