No posts in the last 12 hours!?

Ryk Spoor (aka Seawasp) mentioned on his website several months ago that
he had a new publisher (Untreed Reads), but their website still doesn't
mention him. Does anybody have more information?

I am noticing that there are multitudinous new publishers. It seems
that most of them actually publish ebooks to mostly Amazon and dead tree
books through Amazon's Createspace POD (print on demand) service.

I remember some twenty odd years ago that B&N was planning on putting a
POD service in each of their stores. You would buy the display book and
they would print a new book to replace the display book. The
maintenance requirements of the POD machinery seems to have killed that
business plan off.

But the ice cream machines works fine at Chikfila for my weekly cone.

McD has some sort of proprietary ice cream maker that has a convoluted
cleaning process and can only be repaired by manufacturer's technicians.

But if you want to check on the status of a McD ice cream machine you
can use https://mcbroken.com/

Cool, the McDonalds on the farm road to my house has a broken ice cream
machine. I am not surprised.

However, Chikfila's cones are so much better. It is worth going another
ten miles further. Luckily, I just have to go another three miles further.

One of our local cafes has a print-on-demand coffee froth printer which customers
can command using an app. We got the default seahorse.

And crucially, the ice cream machine vendor MAKES MONEY on the repair
and maintenance. Probably a lot more than what they make on the
machines.

Normally this would result in everyone switching to a different
vendor/machine that isn't complete crap, but McD require this specific
machine, you can't be a McDonalds franchise in the US without it.

As I understand it the vendor in question even have other ice creame
machines that doesn't break down all the time and are user serviceable
so they can compete on the wider market! So there's no inherent
technical reason why it's so bad.

But it doesn't cost McDonalds themselve money and the franchise takers
are forced to use it so there's no pressure back on the vendor to
improve the machines or even just making the error codes
understandable - and they will sue anyone that makes it easier.

Exactly why McDonalds does this has never been proven, but most
speculations are that they get something back from the machine vendor,
perhaps a share of the repair money. Or perhaps it's some kind of
"same owner" cooperation to fleece them. "Just to be evil" has also
been proposed but most think they would have found a way to profit
from it.

McDonalds primary goal in life is to be a real estate owner. Almost all
of the McDonalds restaurant's lots are owned by the McDonalds
Corporation. It is also how they control the franchisees, violate your
agreement and out on the street you go.

It's called "capitalism".

Nothing new here.

As a followup, his email for a Kickstarter project mentioned that his
new publisher has re-released his Demons of the Past trilogy and a brand
new book. The Demons of the Past trilogy now shows up in Apple's Books
store (but not the new book, which Amazon's Kindle store does have).
OTOH, the Untreed Reads website still doesn't mention him.

Oops. I thought I saw the Demons of the Past books in the Apple store,
but they don't show up now.
