I remember a story by Offutt that was based on his real-life experience
when his child was born. They wanted him pay something before they
would let the kid go home. As he said, that instance, he was able to
leave with "Offutt-spring". The story, somewhat different outcome.

A bit of googling about indicates that it was "For Value Received",
from Again, Dangerous Visions.

One silly bit from the above article is that Harlan Ellison stated in
his introduction that you could cause the phone company problems by
overpaying your bill. Most companies have policies for excess payments,
by applying it to the next bill or sending a refund.

But Ellison was kind of a silly bit himself.

I find that pretty much any company you have an ongoing relationship
with, you can overpay.

Nowdays of course, you never know what you owe a hospital when you check out.
You will be getting bills and insurance messages for the next year.

Depends on when he said it and how computerized it was. Some of the
early business systems were /very/ straight-laced.

Thus, one of my friend's parents received a bill for "0.00". Talking
to people didn't help. So they finally wrote a check for "0.00" and
sent it in. Problem solved!

Another, back in the day when the utility bills came on actual
computer punch cards (with the warning "do not fold, spindle, or
mutilate" on them -- remember those days?) liked to take a razor and
cut a few more tall narrow holes in hers before sending it back in.

And some people think adults never have any fun!

>But Ellison was kind of a silly bit himself.

No argument here!
