I would think the first jokes made about how old
they are were closer to the start of their career than
to the end. Whenever that will be.

I'm remembering Ben Bova's _Cyberbooks_,
the satire about book publishing in America
and worldwide, and I think non-appearing but
occasionally mentioned awful and best-selling
author "Sheldon Stoker", and a much later
epilogue at the end where they are still publishing
"Sheldon Stoker Beta" because there are /clones/
of him by then.

....and my dilemma about disposing of one book
I bought a while back because what appeared to be
a bookstore employee's favourable review was
mounted on its shelf, and it is _Gestapo Mars_.
Should I donate it to charity, or to paper recycling?
I feel uneasy about being responsible for it being
read by anyone else. A book trolley problem.

Mike Love's touring Beach Boys still sing "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)".
The song is basically a series of questions ("Will I love my wife
the rest of my life?"). It must be interesting for Love (the lyrcist)
to stand there every night now knowing all the answers. (The answer to
that question was 'No', btw).

There was some 70s depressing story, something like "His Thousandth
Season" about a TV show that had gone on that long with the same host
in a society where people just kept kind of internally decaying
rather than dieing.

Yes, but they've dropped the line "I hope I die before I get old".
Or so I read somewhere.

On the other hand, in his last decade of life, George Burns loved to make a joke about his impending 100th birthday, saying that he couldn't make any plans, he had a booking in London that day. (A joke made better because apparently it was true.)

The name of the show escapes me, but I remember a TV movie set in the 1990s(?)
airing in the 1970s with Senior Citien characters going to a club where rock music
still was played. The premise was that it had become a thing of nostalgia, much as
Big Band music from the 1940s had become by the time the film had been made..

I remember having access on the radio to many formats: classical, jazz, country, R&B,
disco, "beautiful music"/"easy listening," Top 40, album rock and more. The local AM/FM
coffeepot my Dad liked to listen to in the 60s and 70s programmed a lot of music from
the current day and earlier decades that was notrock. I heard a lot of Sinatra, Peggy
Lee and Sergio Mendes when driving with him or getting my hair cut at Larry's Barber Shop.*
Before talk radio ate the US AM (mediumwave) band, there were stations programming
for the older demographic. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Your_Life

Rock hasn't retreated to Nostagia status, though ...
For the first time since Nielsen started measuring music consumption in the United States,
rock is no longer the top genre in terms of overall consumption. Instead, the combined
genre of R&B and hip-hop has taken the crown, and while the two styles are fairly close to
one another when it comes to percentages, the latter has pulled ahead, and it seems like
it will continue to distance itself from the competition in the coming months and years.
- Report: Hip-Hop/R&B Is The Dominant Genre In The U.S. For The First Time

https://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2017/07/17/hip-hoprb-has-now-become-the-dominant-genre-in-the-u-s-for-the-first-time/?sh=75cd13f15383

The music genre divisions are squishy. A lot of what is sold as country these days would
have been considered rock n' roll BITD.

Growing up within the reach of the signals of the networks' flagship stations from New
York City, with many other independent stations available from Long Island, Connecticut
and New Jersey, I may have had more choices than folks in other parts of the country.
There was even college radio playing freaky stuff.

Our other hometown station even programmed Old Time Radio, so I got to hear The
Shadow, The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet the way they were intended to be,
as broadcasts.

* Larry always had an excellent variety of reading matter to peruse while waiting
to get one's crew cut. Besides all the local papers and major magazines, he
got in stacks of the latest comics. No SF magazines, though. One does not
see that at Supercuts or Great Clips these days.
