Usually, although there are some who are genuinely interested and keen
to learn but they just don't have the ability to progress beyond a very
basic understanding.

Why would ya? :)

Sounds like an uncle I had on my father's side. A bloke who married my
father's younger sister who claimed he was a "mechanic" and who thought
his shit was ice-cream who's preferred method of lapping valves was to
coat the underside of a valve head with about a kilo of the corsest
lapping paste he could find and then pop the valve in the guide and
stick the protruding stem in an electric drill chuck and spin the crap
out of the valve pulling on the drill as hard as he could until smoke
was coming off it :)

He'd virtually *bury* the valve into the head and end up with a valve
seat around a half inch wide, but better yet when installing the head he
always coated the gasket in *grease*. When I asked him why he did that
he said it allowed the head to come off cleanly and he could re-use the
gasket.

He didn't seem to have any idea that all of these things were connected,
and why he always seemed to have the head off his old Valiant every time
we visited :)

Yep.

I can tell you right now that someone as utterly clueless as Tom
Clasener is wouldn't get a job sweeping the fucking floor in any shop I
was running, regardless of how eminently qualified he may happen to be.

I'm not the slightest bit interested in anyone's qualification claims.
I'm interested in what they can *do*. Show me that you have the
experience and knowledge to do a job properly without needing to be
micro-managed and shown what to do and you've got the job and can work
for me as long as you wish. However brag about your "qualifications"
while demonstrating a basic lack of understanding of even the most basic
of automotive theories and practices and you're out the fucking door on
your arse.

I'm *only* interested in Candoos. Not wannabees.

> The other uncle (mum's brother) really knew his stuff.

My paternal grandfather was a Tinsmith by trade, but he had no formal
qualifications. He was of the era where a lot of kids left school at the
end of primary school and went out to work, and he did his "training" as
a smith before the war. He was incredibly talented and I can remember
spending an afternoon as a kid watching him make a functioning miniature
tea pot out of an old penny. He basically beat the penny out on an anvil
until he had stretched it into a flat piece of copper about the size of
a bread & butter plate, and then hand formed it into a tea pot making
the spout, lid and handle all out of the same copper "sheet" and
soldered it all together.

It was impressive to watch, but the funny thing was that for all the
time I knew him (he died when I was around 18) he made his living as a
wall and floor tiler. Fucked if I know how you go from being a tinsmith
to tiler, but he did and my father was "apprenticed" to him. I say
"apprenticed", but there was never any formal training. No trade school
or anything like that. It was just my old man leaving school when he was
around 13 or so and working with Pop until by the time he was around 18
he was considered to "have learned".

I don't think the whole affair was anything as traditional as
"Grasshopper walking the length of rice paper and leaving no trace" like
on Kung Fu, but there was something in it. Years later my old man was
asked to become a trade teacher at Collingwood tech but he wasn't
interested. He thought all trade teachers were fucking wankers, and I
can see how he came to that conclusion :)

Not *wether(sic) or not* they are true Darren, for they are definitely
not true. It's that you made fake and fraudulent claims at all - and
multiple fake claims of trade qualifications at that.

I care because you are a *fraud* bringing disrepute to a trade in which
I am qualified. FWIW, this may be a pissy little newsgroup but it is the
*only one* where you have any sort of voice and that only because no one
dared challenge your bullshit in the past. For sure, you are the one who
wanted to be *boss* in this newsgroup. After all, why else would you
make such self aggrandising fraudulent claims with regard to qualifications?

Do you realise how batshit crazy *you* look in pursuing your fraudulent
claims of apprenticeships and trade qualifications? Such a pity you
didn't realise such claims could be easily verified and yours were most
definitely found wanting.

Ah, you are quite wrong when you make that statement. You see, the chap
I was signed up with as an apprentice was a fitter/machinist first and
an aircraft mechanic second. He was not a motor mechanic. The senior
mechanic I worked under was also not a motor mechanic, he was a diesel
fitter.

Not at all Darren. It's just that I have the qualifications and you
don't. Simples.

I elaborated at length on some braking concepts and they were a total
whoosh moment for you. You couldn't even comprehend the relationship and
difference between torque and horsepower, gobbledygook you called it.

Way more than you Darren, way more, and not only in this country.

Hey, maybe those supposedly qualified people are like you Darren, total
frauds. That would be the ultimate irony, eh? A fraud conning a fraud.

And some lie about their achievements. Know anyone like that Darren?
Look in a mirror and you'll see the most obvious one in this newsgroup.

True, your tech school training was a failure which is why you did an
abortus provocatus on your *educational gestation* before exam time.
That said, that failure was a harbinger of your *future failures* which
was why no one was ever *willing or able* to sign you up to any
apprenticeship.

If Les' engine is anything to go by, you've well and truly made more
than your fair share of cockups. Riproaring cockups at that. Would have
loved to have been present when Les' engine popped its clogs.

Lives in Merrimu, does he? Name of Darren? Who ended up fixing the
cockup with les' engine Darren? Not you, that's for sure.

Yep, they watch the video (that's the training) then do the task (that's
the experience). You've just described technical training Darren. Study
the principles, see how it is done, then go do it. Keep on doing it
until you master it.

So you're admitting now you had no training nor completed an
apprenticeship? Sure looks like it the way you are harping on about
experience trumping all. Funny then, isn't it, how an apprenticeship is
all about *training* AND *experience*. You see Darren, an apprentice (a
real one, not your pretend ones) do training in a tech college as an
adjunct to real world experience in a workshop environment. Let's see,
an apprentice will attend his workplace environment for 7,680 hours over
4 years, making allowance for 4 weeks of annual leave a year. Of that
total, said apprentice will attend tech college for 960 hours over 3
years. That means the apprentice will be in the workshop gaining *hands
on experience* for 6,720 hours out of 7,680. A 7:1 ratio of workshop
experience to college training. Even then, apprentices are not stuck in
a theory classroom for all of their 960 hours at tech college. During my
apprenticeship, it was less than 50%, the rest of the time spent in a
workshop engaged in practical tasks. During my time teaching, there was
no such an animal as theory classes in automotive departments in
Victoria - all classes were combined theory and prac. All you are doing
with all your waffle Darren is proving you've never done an
apprenticeship, any apprenticeship, ever!

We aren't talking about a movie plot here. What Darren is doing is
*fraud*, plain and simple. He is claiming qualifications he simply does
not possess.

Have a look at the *end result* of his workmanship on Les' engine.
There's some real insight there as to Darren's capabilities - or the
lack thereof.

Better kick yourself out of your own workshop Darren. You've been

bullshitting about your qualifications, yet Les' engine demonstrated
your "basic lack of understanding of even the most basic of automotive

It's an apprenticeship Darren. That's how it was until a trade was

why you cannot take on an apprentice - you aren't a master tradesman.

If he never attended trade school Darren, how could he come to such a

There's a lot of things in the underpinning theory department that
Darren doesn't understand. One term I used, effective compression ratio,
really had him bamboozled. Anyone who understand engine airflow knows
all about effective compression ratio (as opposed to Geometric CR). The
people who use the concept most? Well apart from those involved in
*aviation*, the people in automotive who use the term most pointedly are
those involved in *racing*. You see, effective compression ratio in a
naturally aspirated engine is greatly affected by altitude and
barometric pressure. That's why racers need to recalibrate carb jetting
according to altitude and baro pressure but that also affects effective
compression ratio. The ones most concerened with effective compression
ratio are those involved in any form of *supercharging*. Remember how
Darren claimed to have been involved in drag racing? Well, he blew that
lie out of the water himself when he called bullshit on the concept of
effective compression ratio (AKA dynamic CR). Those who don't understand
the basic theory end up tripping over their own feet every single time.
Darren must have a dead flat nose by this.

LOL, I can still remember some of my trade teachers from Batman
Automotive College, it was a very long time ago (early 70's).
One in particular (I think his name was Bart Pridmore) was a pretty cool
bloke because his racing Mini was occasionally in the classroom/workshop
and we got to do some work on it.
I particularly liked the teacher who did diesels which I think was 3rd
yr, he asked if any of us worked on diesels and I was the only one who
said yes, he asked me to do a test which was fitting a diesel injector
pump then timing, bleeding and starting the engine, I did that and he
said that I had just passed the end of year exam so I didn't need to
come to class anymore so I just went home 2hrs early every trade school
day:-)
Couldn't say if any of them were good at their trade but they were
likeable enough.

The only one I knew from Batman was John Marshall who was an auto trans
specialist and who used to built my Powerglides back in the days when I
was into drag racing. Great guy and superb auto guru. He used to think
Trade Teaching was a load of shit and most of the teachers were knobs,
and he only did it because it was an easy guaranteed income while he ran
his home auto business on the side :)

I knew most of the ones at Richmond Tech. Some were cool, some were
complete tossers. Knew all the paint and panel staff, and they were the
same deal. For the most part I think the majority became teachers
because it was easy.

His name was Bart Pridmore. I knew him quite well since he left Batman
Automotive and ended up at the Hawthorn Campus of Melbourne Uni. That,
for your info, was the *Victorian Technical Teacher's College. Three
others in automotive there were Ray Retell (Dept. Head), Alan Barratt
and Ray Busby. I spent a total of 6 years at that college. BTW, the
above info, unlike so much of the bullshit you fling about, is *verifiable*.

You? Into drag racing? Hahahahahhaha. Your engines don't last a lap at
Bathurst. God help them in a drag race.

Throw some teacher's names out there Darren. *Your name* is mysteriously
absent from the motor mechanics and auto machining area. Why is that?

> complete tossers. Knew all the paint and panel staff, and they were the

Of course you did, you spent a long time on the hobby paint and panel
course of an evening. You must have been a very slow learner.

> same deal. For the most part I think the majority became teachers

Anyone who thinks teaching is easy has never done any teaching. What's
more, you have never sat in *any* automotive class as an apprentice.

That name isn't familiar but I started at Batman in 1970, the first year
it opened.
Don't remember doing any auto trans training, may have but I don't
remember:-)

Could be.
One of my mechanic uncles had to give it away because the oil and dirt
etc gave him severe dermatitis, he ended up spending a lot of his
working life driving trucks so its possible some tradies could end up as
teachers because they had trouble with or simply don't like getting dirty.

what does it say? and are you saying you knew he wasn't and if so why?
but since you don't answer questions, here's my 'thought process'. He
drives a sporty car, typical of younger persons. he plays cricket (not
exactly an old mans game), he usually posts early in morning, consistent
with someone who works during the day, and he 'sounds' young by his
phraseology and terminology. but here's the clincher, he once posted a
photo of a young couple who I thought he said were friends. something
wrong with that 'thought process' is there jonzie?

Felix thinks that injector cleaner makes his engine run better. Tells

Crikey!

You'd think that if *anyone* should stay right away from criticising other
peoples' thought process it'd be The Fraudster. He who needs to invent
whopping great lies, childishly abuse people who don't believe his every
word *and* chickens out when he gets any blowback. Hmmmmm. Come to think of
it... Is there any evidence that The Fraud has "thought processes"?

I don't normally recommend additives of any form, especially lubricant
additives, but injector cleaner worked on my previous Toyota when one of
the injectors was a tad sticky on a cold start. The engine would run
briefly on 3 cylinders after a cold start and pick up after a few
revolutions. Didn't flag a code, unsurprising since it was in open loop
with an enriched mixture anyway. It was either the injector cleaner or R
& R of injectors and an ultrasonic clean while they were out. Since I
didn't have an ultrasonic cleaner or an injector pulser, the injector
cleaner was worth a try - and it worked. So, yes, the injector cleaner
definitely made my engine run better. An alternative to injector cleaner
is to run a tank full of 98 RON through the engine every now and then.
98 has a higher level a detergent cleaner in it and is less prone to
varnish and gumming up.

flawed.
