Hello

Many of those reading here will have viewed the superb videos made of
Morro Bay by LO (Savageduck)

I've posed a question in a Mac Forum which someone here may be able to
answer. If you can help, please do so - either there or here on Usenet.

https://www.mac-forums.com/threads/apple-icloud-drive-query-can-you-help-please.374462/

Thanks.

Did you note the /reason/ for running the EtreCheck report?

<problemdescription>Inability to communicate with Mr John
Daniel!</problemdescription>

Mike Easter provided the header information:
http://al.howardknight.net/?ID=166164359200

The IMPORTANT question, though, is *HOW* did that report get into my
iCloud Drive?

I didn't knowingly put it there myself.

When using access via the Finder one doesn't really appreciate the size
of the vast cloud which sits above us. I wanted to show this graphically
so that readers recognise that erasing one's internal hard drive does
not entirely 'clear the decks' as it were.

Any malicious code could be hidden - in plain sight - in one's iCloud
Drive, only to reappear again once the clean machine connects to the
Internet.

Does that make sense to you? Please have a think about this and then
discuss.

Thanks

I don't think you *posted* the reason for running a bit of software that
you claim to be suspicious of. You probably hid it in a link and forgot
about it instead of actually posting it here.

To be fair, you're the guy who was recently amazed that you could click
on a link to a video and ...(wait for it)...the video played! So, yeah,
technical things are going to be over your head.

Can you think of any reason why the thread I started on Mac-Forums has
been removed?

This was my original post here in these Usenet groups:-

I've posed a question in a Mac Forum which someone here may be able to
answer. If you can help, please do so - either there or here on Usenet.

https://www.mac-forums.com/threads/apple-icloud-drive-query-can-you-help-please.374462/

Thanks.

FYI - message received by email this morning:-

Mac-Forums
Rod replied to a thread you are watching at Mac-Forums.

Apple iCloud Drive query - can you help, please?
Starting at the beginning you asked, how did the things
(folders/documents) in your iCloud Drive get there?
When I go to my Apple ID in Apple System Preferences I see the below image.
Screen Shot 2022-08-29 at 8.07.46 am.png
Note that iCloud Drive is ticked and Optimise Mac Storage is not.

On the right of iCloud Drive is a box marked "Options" when I click that
I see the window below.

Screen Shot 2022-08-29 at 8.17.30 am.png
As you can see this is a scrollable window, there are a lot more items
ticked below what you see including Pages, Books, Garage Band and System
Preferences but note I do not have Desktop and Documents ticked.

The resulting iCloud Drive Folder accessed from my Finder looks like this;

Screen Shot 2022-08-29 at 8.46.31 am.png

It is, essentially an off site (cloud) storage space where I can store
whatever is ticked in the iCloud Drive Options window, anything I choose
to store there from either the Save (to iCloud Drive) box or in the case
where the Desktop and Documents Folders option is ticked in the second
screen shot, anything you save to either the Desktop or Documents folders.

None of this data is accessible by a third party, only by you via your
Apple ID and password.

Have a look at my screen shots, is this how your iCloud preferences are
setup, if not how are yours different to mine?

Addit; iCloud Drive is like an external hard drive in that you can
delete files or drag them onto your desktop or into another folder, it's
simply off site private (encrypted) storage space. Nothing goes into it
unless you choose to put it there, either by selecting an option in
preferences or physically dragging it into the folder and, no one can
access it but you.

No. If I did it would change exactly nothing.

My real-life friend, who lives near Bristol, had been banned for asking
that question. Sad. :-(

Has anyone else had 'problems' with over-moderation on the mac-forums site?

>Has anyone else had 'problems' with over-moderation on the mac-forums site?

Just a few folks who had great difficulty with following the basic
rules. In other words, idiots. Why do you ask? Oh, that's right.

Let's do a thought exercise. Think back to the numerous times in recent
years when you've asked why your threads keep getting removed. Think
about the answers you've been given each time. Have I jogged your memory
a bit?

It would appear that they have!

Start with top left hand corner with  > System Preferences > Apple ID >

UNCHECKED

Malware COULD be stored in the iDrive too!

See: Comment "1" here:-

Please discuss if you have concerns.
