Has a 1940's weekend on the 16th and 17th of September if anyone is
interested in that sort of thing.

Hopeless webpage but go to Visiting > Open Days for further info.

And it's next door to a brewery with a bar

I won't make the dates stated, but I can say this is an excellent
museum with interesting exhibits and friendly and helpful staff.
Trolleybuses seem to be less well known that trams (and some of the
younger generation don't know the difference). A good wee day out, as
they say in Glasgow.

Rather too far for me, but it brought back memories of bus spotting in
London in the early 60s, in particular sneaking in to the "trolleybus
graveyard" in Colindale.

I visited Lowestoft about 20 years ago while on holiday in Norwich. I
don't remember ever seeing anything about that museum, or I'd definitely
have visited it. I can just remember going on some trolleybuses in SW
London which had the upper parts of the windows in dark glass. They were
originally intended for export to South Africa, but were not sent in the
end.

Here's the rather sad ending for trolleybuses at Colindale:

As a child I lived in Chiswick. My route to school involved the 667
(operated from Fulwell where the final trolleybus operated)) which ran
on the same wires as the 657 (out of Isleworth). I don't remember
either depot running the South African variants. My memory suggest
that the SA buses were only used in East London (based at Ilford?).

I'm not old enough to remember the immediate years after WW2 but I
think the rules during that war about not showing lights at night may
have been the cause of shaded windows all over the country.

I think it is heritage week(end) across the country.
Lots of interesting places open to the public.

The Grand Designs 'Triangular House' in Pulborough
is open this weekend.

It's certainly London's Open House weekend (or strictly the second of
them since they are doing it over 2 this year).

I think you're right. The Sandtoft link here mentions it
<https://sandtoft.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/London_1348.pdf>. My
bus-spotting days took me all over London with a child "Red Rover" (1/3d
if I remember correctly), so it could well have been Ilford, or it could
have just been at Colindale, awaiting scrapping. It was over 60 years
ago, so details are a bit hazy to say the least! There's a picture here
<https://www.flickr.com/photos/rtw501/33077428428> which is said to show
a trolleybus intended for SA, but it doesn't have the darkened windows.
The link from the Wiki on London trolleybuses
(<http://archive.commercialmotor.com/article/14th-november-1941/22/south-african-trolleybuses-for-london>)
mentions the darkened windows.

Neither am I, but the SA trolleys definitely had windows shaded for
glare as mentioned in the ref above.

Why did the vehicles not go to South Africa? At that time I think it
was a Dominion - long before full independence - so we (UK) would have
considerable influence. We desperately needed exports at that time.
(They drive on the left as I recall).

They pass you on both sides. Undertaking is a normal event on their roads. Just watch out for enormous dongas (washed out chasms in the carriageway) after heavy rain

Apparently in Canada it is perfectly legal to pass on either side with
the incentive to stay in lane.

From the Sandtoft link I gave above:
"... in 1941 and 1943 London Transport acquired 43 trolleybuses that had
been ordered for South Africa but could not be shipped there because of
the war. These vehicles were allocated to Ilford depot.

We also had an experimental four wheeled Trolley Bus at Fulwell Depot.

If I had only kept all my Ian Allan bus-spotters books I could have
checked if I'd seen it or not! :-)

"Experimental" because it was in London or because it was a different
design from the four wheel trolley buses I used in Maidstone in the 60s?

This one would have been running about 30 years before your Maidstone
trolleybus.
<https://www.ltmuseum.co.uk/collections/collections-online/photographs/item/1998-63774>
All trolleybuses in London after the war were 6-wheelers. The last one
ran in May 1962, so the Maidstone ones would have probably been running
after the final London trolleybus.

Okay. I missed that nuance.
