I had the misfortune while channel hopping the other night to alight on one
of the semi finals of this years contest on the red button channel.
I thought it was a song contest? IE songs should have discernable tunes in
them, not be a mish mash of bits of what should like jingles set to rock
backing sung by ladies who seemingly need to shout rather than sing.
Obviously, maybe I just caught it at a bad time, but its a cross between a
freak show and a noise.
Of course I could be biased due to my age, as I am sounding like my parents
did about it when I was young. Still, is not the format getting tired, maybe
it should be rebranded to something else than a song contest, as the
performers seem to be a bigger part in it than the song or its arrangement,
assuming you can figure out what the song is of course.
Brian

SWMBO and I used to watch it and enjoy it, but we haven't bothered with it
for years - the tunes just aren't tunes any more.

That's the assumption according to the pundits, and they are also suggesting
that the UK entry might not get "null points" this year. From what I've seen
of the UK entry (sung by Samuel Stratocaster, IIRC) I have my doubts.

Without making any evaluation of the quality of any of the
songs/music/lyrics/visuals it always has been anything but a song
contest. It always has been a toothless opportunity continue whatever is
'Europe's' current diplomatic obsession.

On this occasion I am reminded of the USSR vs Hungary water polo Olympic
semi-final match. This time, unfortunately it turned into open warfare,
understandably.

I despise the whole horrid cacophonic tintinnabulation.

All I know is that Ireland is at record odds not to get past the
semi-finals.

Besides that,, you do not understand the rabid tribalism that exists in
Eastern Europe, the Arab idea that `The enemy of my enemy is my friend'
is simple,

Eurovision is not, and never has been, about music.

I am amused every time about the support in Germany, krutzburg anyway,
for Turkey.

This is very true, but for some reason it has lasted a lot longer
than Jeux sans Frontieres/It's a Knockout/Telematch which is a pity because
it's a lot less fun.

Highly likely. Not only for the sympathy vote but also because it's a
rousing toon. One for Tone's earworms. I wonder whether anyone is thinking
of an English language version?

There should be two classes of the contest (and why not more?).

One aligned to modern pop music and production, and the other to the
more traditional performance. Having both in the same event is a glitz
emblazoned disappointing car crash.

It would also be a nice headache for those countries that really only
spend their votes politically, as they would be staggeringly consistent
for both contests, and outed (and they should be).

Actually, we should have two charts for UK sung music sold here, split
along the same lines (dunno, is there?).

I'd have more interest in following performers in a weekly list
excluding the Singing Daleks and other heavily manufactured things.

Having now heard the UK entry, I think it's not too bad, as Eurovision
entries go. The writer has definitely heard "A spaceman came travelling"
fairly recently though.

I happened to hear the first minute or so of the Armenian entry as I
channel hopped. Very Eurothump with a definite feeling that the writer
had listened to Mary Hopkin in the recent past.

I used to watch/listen to it years ago.

Then I started to switch off once the voting started.

A simple webpage could collect all the votes from all the panels in well
under a minute.

Now I eschew it altogether.

If it was actually about the songs then, IMHO, they should all be
performed by the same artist(s); probably from the host country.

Seems to be dominated by Ludovico Einaudi at the moment.

I've recorded it but haven't yet whizzed through it. The year that
Abba won, most of the show was the usual non-tunes in minor keys,
until almost the end when Abba sang their silly but tuneful and jolly
song Waterloo, which I still think is their best. Nice tunes have
always been a rare event in the show.

written and recorded as their marriages broke up.

Waterloo was quite a standout from the normal Eurovision tripe of the
time, which rarely seemed to have progressed past the 50s. I'd say that
it's nowhere near their best song though.

Well, I beg to differ. Some of te Irish Entries of the past have been quite
good, and biggest problem at one time was the way everyone seemed to be
obsessed with drums.
Puppet on a String was actually originally written as a dig at the way
women were thought of by men, apparently which was why Sandie Shaw hated it
so much. The re treatment of it as a happy bouncy I'm happy being a puppet
thing was really off putting.
