Ok so I've got all the bits out of the boxes and am ready to start the
set up. First pair the keyboard and mouse, err the instructions
say say update the OS Apple > Sustem Prefs > Software update, then
instructions to pair the keyboard/mouse. How do I update the OS without
a keyboard or mouse?

Someone writing on MacRumurs forum has/had similar problems but it's
not clear if the problem is resolved. Were you not prompted to
connect bluetooth devices on start up?

Use *any* wired USB mouse at this stage!

Good luck!

The other problem is the keyboard and mouse come with a USB-C/Lightneing
cable each. There is no USB-C socket on the computer -) I'massuming the
studio display ports will do the job.

Not actually started yet as I'm just completing the back-ups of the iMac
I'm migrating from.

Or get suitable USB-C to A adapters? You can get them from Amazon, eBay
etc.

Although without a hub that would tie up your USB-A ports :(

If this is a new Mini, not a new-old one like a 2014, surely there are
Thunderbolt/USB-C ports on the back?

One thunderbolt port driving the display!

Right, started up the mini with the keyboard and mouse connected to the
display via cables and, after a prompt to switch both on, they paired
seamlessly. So far so good.

Next, I had both computers connected by Ethernet via the router and
launched migration assistant. All went well for around 20 hours till it got
to about 3/4s of the way through transferring about 1TB on information when
it stalled. It’s been stalled for around 3 hours now at 480018 files
transferred.

The question is what can I do now?

If you are migrating from Intel to Silicon there's a school of thought that says "don't".
There could be problems with apps as MA won't replace Intel apps with M1 equivalents for
instance. You may end up having to install your apps from scratch. I guess you try again
but excluding app?

Everything. I've now reset everything and am attempting the migration
from the time Machine disc instead.

SWMBO is happy as I've derigged the temporary ethernet I had festooned
through the kitchen on its way from the router to the study.

That's something I hadn't thought of. Though he does appear to havee a
lot of odd things like custom software and emulators, development tools
and so on which I don't have to worry about.

If I remember rightly, when I got my M1 Mac, I didn't migrate any
applications as I wanted to clear out unwanted stuff. Thus I installed
those I really wanted/needed from scratch, although quite a few were still
x86 apps and needed Rosetta 2 anyway!

It's not correct. I migrated my iMac Pro over to the M1 MBP, and I've
not had to manually update anything. I have a few Intel apps, mostly
games, and nothing I use regularly. All my normal set sorted themselves
out to Universal at some point.

Great! Then with a bit of luck GW should be OK. As I said, I deliberately
left out apps when I migrated nearly 2 years now - doesn't time fly ;)

That's useful to know, it is what I suspected. Once I've done the
migration ( projected to be the wee small hours at the moment) I will
have to check for updates. I suspect the OS will be the first to need
updating, don't, as yet, know which version it shipped with.

I hope you are aware that you need to reinstall macOS Monterey BEFORE
using Migration Assistant.

Incidentally it runs reasonably well on ‘Silicon’ Macs too if you ever want
