Hi,

go to the Jaycar site and enter TIP31 in the search box.

https://www.jaycar.com.au/

Lots of their transistors have grown extra legs....

**YIKES! That is confusing, but it prompts a more serious question:

Why the fuck would you trust ANY product from Jaycar? Unless it is a
weekend emergency, I would not buy a damned thing from those arseholes.
Everything they sell is rubbish.

** They now have to compete with Ebay.
Once they only had to compete with Dick Smiths.

DSE have sold tens of thousands of FAKE Motorola TO3 power transistors.
I have a DSE brand DMM ( Q1424 ) that locks up the display if I use it on a valve amp.
I once bought 12 x LM741s that were all rejects & faulty.

Only reliable places are RS and E14.

The prices at RS rocketed up about a year ago, and now they're no
longer offering free delivery on low-value orders. It makes E14
cheaper on a lot of occasions where previously it was the other
way round.

Their default "we don't have an image for that" image. Big deal.
Why you would search Jaycar for those components is the funny part.

Yep. Instead of removing free shipping RS might have done something to
address their wasteful packaging instead to reduce cost.

Except that they do have a generic TO-220 image, as for ZT2466 for example.

If you need a TIP31 today, it makes sense.

**Not really. Jaycar and, to a lesser extent, WES, have poor form when
it comes to counterfeit and sub-spec components.

True story:

A few years back, I worked part time for a mate who needed an audio tech
a couple of days per week. Most of his business was TV and videos. I
recall listening to his TV tech swearing one day. I toddled up and asked
him what the problem was. He explained that he had installed the same
MOSFET 7 times into a TV set and it blew every time, despite carefully
checking everything. I asked where the MOSFETs came from. He told me
that they were supplied by WES and cost $2.75 each. I suggested he buy
one from RS or Element14 (might have been Farnell back then), as I had
found that WES had supplied some dodgy TO3 BJTs to me once. He expressed
surprise that anyone would bother counterfeiting a $2.75 MOSFET.
Nonetheless, he ordered a replacement from Element14. It worked
perfectly. WES graciously refunded the full purchase price of the 7
dodgy MOSFETs, but not the day and a half labour it took to bugger around.

The only things I buy from Jaycar are nuts and bolts and other bits of
hardware. It is just not worth buying their shit. It is just rubbish.

BTW: This just arrived:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001820547522.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.6e9b4c4djQByBJ

Bloody brilliant. It was supposed to come with a power supply, but that
didn't arrive, but I found an old 12V 3A wall wart which works a treat.
10 seconds to 300 degrees C.

Well, I hope the BF472 I've ordered from WES are the real deal. They
seem hard to source now.

Should have arrived yesterday, but StarTrak pulled the no-one home stunt
again, when there were two people home.

Sylvia.

**Agreed. I order a lot of stuff from WES and have only really had
problems with their audio cables and TO3 transistors. Having said that,
their premium audio cables (which are not expensive) are superb. Hand
soldered, good quality RCA connectors, foil and braid shielded and PE
insulation. They look nice too. Never had a problem with one, which is
more than I could say about their cheap range. They are mechanically and
electrically poor quality.

Having gone through a "how the hell does this work" phase with the
circuit diagram, I've realised that since it's a DC coupled amplifier,
all the capacitively coupled BF472 parts of the circuit are doing is
improving the transient response, which is probably not that relevant
except when operating it in X-Y mode. I suspect that any high voltage
PNP transistor would do just as well.

Sylvia.

Here's a weird one, the 17 year old plasma TV died with a minor
explosion from somewhere inside. I couldn't be bothered to fix it so I
bought a new "Smart" 4K TV. The TEAC from the lounge replaced the old
plasma in the family room and the new TV went into the lounge. I
connected the new TV to the Fetch box with the same HDMI cable that the
TEAC had used for the last 3 years - the TV couldn't see the Fetch. Got
another cable - every thing was fine but the cable was a bit short, so I
swapped with the one currently working on the other TV - didn't work
either. So this TV only works with one out of 3 apparently identical
cables. Strange.

Not when they are counterfeit or underrated components... and you never
know when you buy from Jaycar.

I have found the same thing. Bought a new TV, not even a 4K, and there
are, it would seem, HDMI cables and there are HDMI cables and they
aren't always equal. I have some cheapies and, as I have found, they are
a WOFTAM.

Those BJTs are *current sources* for the CRT plate drivers !!
At high slew rates, they get a small boost.

The voltage on the base of T704 sets the current through R722, and
through the collector of T704. T706 is configured as an emitter
follower, and draws little base current. The base current of T709 is
minimal, so the base of T706 sits at about 1.2 V. The collector current
through T704 therefore defines the voltage at the collectors of T708 and
T709, and the D2 output to the CRT. Any excess of that voltage over the
defined voltage increases the current through R724/5, and thus
increasing the base current of T706 and hence T709, which draws more
collector current, restoring the voltage to the defined voltage.

And vice-versa.

A high slew rate requires a higher T709 collector current, but that
current is not varying, so nor is the base current. There would be
nothing for T708 to see through C706.

** WTF does this drivel mean?

" ... all the capacitively coupled BF472 parts of the circuit "

The BF472s are NOT capacitvely coupled.
Improved " transient response " = what actual change ?
Why does it disappear in X-Y mode?

FFS try to make sense.

Hello Group,

I'm the owner of a few Ecommerce Electrical and Appliance Parts websites.
Our Warehouse and Retail Parts counter is located Unit 2/68 Parramatta Road, Underwood 4119 QLD.
We are open to the public.
My main website is https://electricalsuppliesaustralia.com.au/
In my younger years I worked at Dick Smiths Electronics, I'm still missing all of the electronics kits and components we used to sell.
I'm wondering if there are any Electrical items or components which you are struggling to source. Also are there any items you would like to see kept in stock locally?

Thanks,
Steve
