I wonder what is in it a combination of drain cleaner and hydrochloric aced.
What a pong.
Builders used it to clean cement drips from my patio this afternoon, now
the whole house smells of the stuff.

The drain cleaner I use is concenetrated sulphuric acid. Effective but
dangerous - makes a nice whoomph when you put it into water.

Well the guy, who was wearing shorts, said it stung his leg when it
splashed. lets hope I don't have a crater in my patio tomorrow. He laid it,
so he can fix it!

Real dangerous stuff. When being diluted there is a lot of heat produced
and toilet bowls can crack. Water added to the concentrate can be
explosive. When I was a student you needed safety equipment before you
handled concentrated sulphuric acid and a few other things. That was
before the days of 'Elfin Safe Tea.

I spent three years using chromic acid to clean my research glassware. Lab
coats didn't last long.

Makes an even more spectacular (and dangerous) one if you put water
into it.

No. 27 on the "Things not to do with strong acids" list.

Wow, what is number 1 then?
douse yourself in it I suppose.
Ammonia is not very nice stuff either. We used to use a technical drawing
copy machine that used it. Even with extractors a visit to the department
nearly always cleared your nasal passages, I can tell you.

Yes well, if two chemicals react very quickly then itsan explosion.
I notice that some weapons now have small explosives inside very
concentrated oxygen, to make them go bang better one supposes.

So how do they get Chlorine into swimming pools and water generally then?
No I don't go for making explosives, stable or otherwise, you can get
arrested for that. I do remember some 6th formers managed to blow several
windows out of the chemistry lab doing something with weed killer, in their
lunch break. Oh dear.

It has been tried, but " Many attempts have been made to use this acid
in batteries, but the volatile nature of the acid causes the production
of so much odour with corrosive fumes that it has never come into use."

The corrosive fumes include chlorine, which is not nice and has been
used as a war gas in the past. When using sulphuric acid, the acid stays
stable, and the only emissions are hydrogen and oxygen.

The reason being that the acid is much heavier than the water so mixing
occurs naturally, provide you add the acid slowly enough (which is the
second part of the safety instruction). Adding the water second creates a
layer, and the exothermic reaction takes place at the interface, generating
steam which blows the mixture out of the container and (quite likely) into
your face.

Yes, but it won't hold its charge as well. It's the lead sulphate/lead metal
equilibrium that stores the energy in a lead acid battery.

Smaller private pools use tablets of trichloroisocyanuric acid (which is an
intriguing molecule). Public baths used to use chlorine gas generated on
site from hypochlorite and acid - there were occasional incidents of
children being gassed. Not sure what they use now.
