SWMBO would agree with you, there are several indigrents that would cause
her to dislike it.

But give me a ginormous bowl of the stuff and a spoon and I would happily

Unless I want an explosive bowl (is that bowl or bowl, both are probably
true) response they are all off for me.

I have no sympathy wrt veganism and find most of their 'substitute' for
meat recipes disgusting in taste and mouth feel, however some of the
vegan deserts, biscuits and cakes, marketed by eTsco and aWitrose better
than their creamy/milky namesakes. I have stopped buying Wicked Cookies
only because I can eat a whole packet at one sitting. In curries, that I
make for myself, substituting creamed coconut for milk/cream/yoghurt
works better than in the original recipe.

How I wish mincemeat still had beef suet in it. Mmm of memory.

We have the occasional (mostly) plant-based meal when we remember. The other
day I molished a shepherd's pie with Quorn mince which I seasoned with
Worcester sauce, soy sauce and tomato ketchup. It wasn't at all bad.
Excavated sheep, I made some beef gravy to go with it.

I note that you did say mostly plant based. Just for clarity Worcester
Sauce is based on Anchovies. I know about this, being allergic to fish.

I would not eat Quorn, it is as much a product of an industrial process
as food can be.

I'm not idealistically anti veganstoffs, some of it is quite acceptable
AFAIC, but some of it is UAB.

IMO one rubbish veganstoff is egg replacement formulation(s). It just
doesn't.

One of m more careless carers went shopping for me and brought back
Quorn because she couldn't find the TVP* mince.

*textured vegetable protein - i.e., soya mince

The Quorn ended-up going mouldy in the fridge, Prolly improved it.

So would mine, however making mincemeat is real bucket chemistry and my
arthritic joints will not take it and it produces more than I can eat in
a year.

Also suet is not easy to buy, I do not know of any source round here.

Shepherd's pie is made from mutton mince. Quorn from used lubricating oil.

Fortunately mincemeat is based on old meat-preserving recipes and
consequently keeps for a very long time. Having to much does not
compute. I'll be using up the last of my 2012 mincemeat next Christmas

>Also suet is not easy to buy, I do not know of any source round here.
If you want pure unadulterated suet you will need a traditional
butcher who keeps half-carcases in his cold room. For the rest of us
there's Atora which comes in veg and non-veg versions where it is sold
but I notice that most of the Atora-a-likes sold in Aldidl are only
veg.

Soya based TVP is definitely an improvement on Quorn which most
closely resembles the very worst tasteless rubber chicken. The ones I'm
looking forward to trying are the Impossible burgers (made with heme from
GM yeast - so it'll be a while before it comes into the EU but apparently
is heading into the UK soon) and V2Foods mince which also has non-meat heme
but from a non GM source so they are aiming at the EU.

Very true, OTOH my daughter has a vegan chocolate cake recipe that
is very good, the surprising ingredient is apple sauce.

I'm not saying that ultra-processed food is automatically bad: there's
a cheesecake I buy with a list of ingredients as long as your arm and
cheese comes a looooong way down that list but I like it. But while a
lot of veggie/vegan food is unprocessed (eg carrots) or processed (eg
sugar) an increasing amount is ultraprocessed with all sorts of
unlikely ingredients added to make it appear/taste/behave like
something it isn't. It's good that people are moving into veggie and
vegan foods (and though I'd never describe myself as either a v or a
v, sometimes I go for weeks without eating any meat just because I
enjoy other stuff) but for the sake of our health we ought to be
moving away from ultraprocessed foods too and it sometimes looks as
though with the popularity of veganism we are rushing faster and
faster towards an ultraprocessed future.

Meat-based things can also have contents you might rather not have in your
mouth, of course.

Most of the ultraprocessed things are an attempt to imitate meat
which is almost always a failure but close enough to serve as a substitute
in meat based recipes. Very few of the vegans or vegetarians I know eat
much of them (many won't touch them) - but most did for a while when they
first stopped eating meat/animal products.

The things I find strangest are vegan sushi and black puddings,
they can't possibly taste anything like the things they imitate and if they
don't what's the point ?

You can almost tell whether, say a burger or sausage, will be any good

Can I put in a plea for 'mince' which doesn't actually need a mincer in

I think a handy kitchen gadget now would be a mincemeat unscrambler.

I like the Vegetarian Butcher's burgers and Richmond veggie sossidges
(not so much Heck ones though, their meaty ones are nice though).

MNAAW; MTAAW. I will not eat vegetarian or vegan substitutes unless
absolutely nothing else is available, and then only with great
reluctance, and if I am extremely hungry. I have always found such items
to be a very poor substitute for the real thing.

I unforget eating lunch at a cafe attached to a visitor attraction
(which shall remain nameless) somewhere near the English south coast.
Unfortunately I chose 'Shepherdess's Pie' which turned out[44906] to
have been molished with some non-meat poor imitation of real meat; it
was UAB, both in taste and mouth-feel.

[44906]Afterwards, I enquired as to its meat content, and was told that
it was made with 'vegetarian mince'.

There's the promble right there /substitutes/ most meat dishes tend
not to jbex well if you substitute a different kind of meat TAAAW, but yes
imitation meats are for the most part *awful* - the worst are the ones that
go to great pains to look the part (bleeding beetroot juice indeed)
regardless of taste pr texture.

Yet almost all potato crisps are vegan regardless of flavour - I've
always avoided prawn cocktail flavours on the grounds of my fish allergy,
which it turns out is more likely to be triggered by a glass of red wine
than a pack of Skips but I still CBA to try them.

TVP wot I always called 'soya mince' is quite acceptabubble if treated
as TVP and not pretend meat: in fact I have some in a pot of swoop (not
Swoop) I'm preparing for laterer. It'll have some real chicken stock in
it innit, molished from skin, bones, gristle and On!ons.
