I sent an email to 3 people at a company and have received the following:

*************
A custom mail flow rule created by an admin at x.co.uk has blocked your
message.
This message has been rejected by the x email platform as this message
must be directed to mail@x.co.uk
*************

What will have happened to the original email?

I remember some discussion in a techy group ages ago when somebody
suggested bouncing spam but it was said it would cause chaos however
tempting.

That's entirely determined by the mail admins at company 'x'.

_Don't_ do this.

More often than not the "from" address isn't the spammer, but someone
else on their victim list.

Better, don't accept email then attempt to bounce to [probably forged]
'from' address(es). I've been on the wrong end of one of those.

There's not an issue with simply refusing to accept mail you don't like
during the smtp transaction. It puts any problem where it belongs, on
the server sending to you.

IMO of course.

Many thanks for the replies :-)

I think I will ask in the legal group whether an email that receives the
response described would be regarded as delivered, the receiving company's
system clearly receive it even if it end up in /dev/null.

Interestingly, a letter posted is legally deemed to have been received two days
later - as I found out in a battle over a traffic ticket (which they said
they'd posted weeks before!).
