I have my bank holiday a week later than yours for some reason. I don't
have a joke here, I just keep forgetting that they don't happen at the
same time.

Play:
--=--

Virtual On (PC) - Another game that's available in Yakuza Kiwami 2 that
I'm nevertheless committed to attempting to run natively in Windows 10.
This one is even harder to get going because it's hardcoded to use that
funny 3DFX graphics card withe the Saturn controller ports in it, so you
can make it run in a Saturn Pad or Twin Sticks but almost no other
controller input. There's something endearing about the Saturn-emulated
graphics and sounds in the PC release from 25 years ago, but the fact that
you can't use actual dual-analogue stick input for anything means that the
arcade emulation inside the Yakuza game will probably be what I go with
over the long term. I stink at Virtual On moreso than I do normal fighting
games, probably because the pace is so much faster and the notion of
three-dimensions of motion (not unlike Powerstone) is exactly one more
dimension than my addled brain seems to be able to handle.

Sonic and Knuckles Collection (PC) - Sonic 3 by itself and Sonic and
Knuckles on its own are unavailable in the official Megadrive Classics
collection on Steam, so if you're after fully legal versions of them on PC
then the only option is to install the old PC release from 1998-ish or so.
The Megadrive emulation that Sega did on their own is pretty crude, in
that it only support keyboard and OG 15-pin PC controller input. And worse
still, it's doing direct hardware access to detect that, so none of the
tools that let you remap USB controller input to keypresses will work. So
I've been cheerfully fettling and configuring and testing until I have a
25-year-old PC game running on my Windows 10 gaming laptop, and now that
it's in an acceptable state I'll probably never actually play it.

Want:
--=--

A bunch of JPN-region Saturn games (SAT) - I traded away my JPN-region
copy of Fighting Vipers for some reason, and I keep thinking that I need
to own a copy of Tactics Formula because it's such a unique and unusual
type of game that nobody has attempted again since. While I'm here I might
as well buy a bunch of other crap too.

Bin:
-==-

Online pawn shops (RL) - I say this after having bought a couple of things
from such an establishment. There used to be something vaguely satisfying
about going around and benefiting from someone else's misfortune,
scarfing up games and game hardware at a reasonable discount after they
had give it up under duress. But with the benefit of hindsight (and with
COVID making in-person store browsing less appealing) it feels less like
something that should happen in a civilised world. So the notion that pawn
shops would gather their most prized and valuable items and pool them for
sale online feels like an exploitative bridge too far. It's hard not to
feel like I've helped someone pay their late rent or their overdue medical
expense, and not in a good way either.

Expenditure:
-----=-----

Balance forward - $3,682

Sega Rally Championship (SAT) - $5
Fighting Vipers (SAT) - $8
World Advanced Daisenryaku (SAT) - $5
Game Ware Vol 3 (SAT) - $3
Tactics Formula (SAT) - $6
Bahamut Senki (MD) - $4
Fatal Fury (MD) - $5
Super Daisenryaku (MD) - $2
Advanced Daisenryaku (MD) - $3
Super Monaco GP (MD) - $8

Total year-to-date - $3,731

That's what happens when you post carelessly and in a hurry. :) We're
trying to maintain a newsgroup here, it only works if we all make an
effort. I mean, at least you've shown up because there's no telling where
Jaimie's gone.

That's okay, I'm a day late anyway.

I played VOOT last night on the DC, if that's any help? I am also bad at
it, but I definitely didn't play long enough to get to grips with the
patterns.

Otherwise,

Breath of the Wild (WiiU->CEMU/PC) - did Vah Ruta and the Rito village
local quests, there's not many. Then headed off to the Gorons, where I
spent an unseemly amount of time chasing lizards around in order to turn
them into fireproof potions. Or, more effectively, swapping a bunch with
a dude for a fireproof armour chest piece that somehow means my toes and
head don't burst into flame. Approaching the last Divine Beast now.
I have found fewer koroks than shrines. From my original playthrough I
remember koroks being *everywhere*.

Beat Saber (PC VR) - not very good at this currently, thanks failing
body. Scoring 10% lower than my PBs or outright failing.

Carto (Steam/Mac) - Played about 90%, lost the savegame. I'd played on
laptop with no wifi; when I got home I installed it on another computer
before syncing up the laptop; Steam synced the newer-dated empty one
over it; I didn't check or use the laptop for a month by which time the
overwrite had long occurred and the local hourly backups had aged off.
Which left me in the comedy position of having almost all the "Got to
Level X" cheevos and also "played for 2 minutes".
The game is good enough (and my memory of the puzzles is bad enough)
that I've put some time back into it - I think it's a six hour game or
so.

Dorfromantik (Steam/PC) - Carto reminded me I had another good map
tiling game. Still no Mac version yet.

Neko Atsume (iOS) - still in denial about the name change to 'kitty
collector'. Collected some more kitties.

> Want:
> --=--

Linkle mod 3.0 for BotW, due this month.

> Bin:
> -==-

Steam save game sync logic being overly simple. Although I did
accidentally construct the perfect cockup. At least it wasn't on
anything important, and I'll be more aware of being off-internet next
time.

Apropos that - Steam didn't give a damn about me not being online, and I
didn't do the 'switch to offline' thing. I could play all the games I
tried. Have they just given up on that feature?

Cheers - Jaimie
