No. In fact shops received more than the amount of merchandise
represented by residents of the area to allow for visitors.

Got one from most of the shopkeepers.

According to wikilies the Golden Hind (née Pelican). That would make
sense as the Golden Hind is more significant in English (I do mean
English) history than the Mayflower.

The Mayflower, rightly or wrongly, is seen as the founding ship for the
United States. There are other claimants, to Jamestown and Spanish and
Breton (mostly unnamed fishermen) have better claims.

As far as I remember, England (and Ireland, which based its currency on
sterling then) stopped including silver in its coins about 1947. That
was the start of the slippery slope that is only now biting us all on
the asses now, with many countries just pumping out nicely printed
notes. With the Russians insisting on being paid in either gold or or
rubles now, are we all returning to the Gold standard abandoned by
Winston Churchill in the 1930s?. Even bitcoin in based on finite
resources.

From a probably faulty memory, I think that there was a proposal in the
'70's that fuel rationing be brought in. It failed when a Mafia store
was raided in Noo Jerk and there were large amounts of fake coupons
discovered.

Sounds about right.

Er no. That slope was well in place long before countries
(reluctantly and against protest) abandoned the gold standard for something
that could scale with the real source of wealth (at that time industrial
production).

The problem (as I see it) was that they went from something based
on a finite and mostly useless (so stockpiling it caused no real problems)
resource that scaled with mining activity and luck to something based on
faith that scales with optimism. What's really needed is some kind of
currency that naturally scales with wealth production - I'm hootered if I
know how to make that work - but perhaps basing it on people would come
close.

> With the Russians insisting on being paid in either gold or or

Only if anyone actually pays them in gold. Paying them in roubles
would eventually eliminate the western rouble reserves and create a demand
for roubles that would run the price up, I don't think anyone in the west
wants to play that game either.

I do not know about rationing in Ireland. During WW2 the UK experienced
rationing of all fuels. Ireland was AIUI then dependant upon the UK for
most fuel supplies, apart from peat for which it was an exporter.

Rationing of petrol in the UK was introduced for six months in 1956-7. I
was too young to remember it apart from seeing a neighbours ration
coupons.

In the UK petrol ration books were issued (I still have mine) in 1973.
They were never actually needed because the increased North Sea
production allowed the UK to offset gas and oil. I have found no
reference to fake coupons playing a part in not introducing rationing.

In the 1979 crisis the UK did not consider rationing at all as the UK
was by then an oil and gas exporter.

At least some of what puts me off is the 'full spectrum dominance'
production.

But not all. He put a 4-song acoustic set up on Bandcamp, early in
lockdown.I thought "OOh, good", listened to about a song-and-a-half and
thought "Oh, the paranoid tthing again" and haven't listened to the rset
of it yet.

See also (from a while back now) Linda Thompson's "Versatile Heart". The
good bits weren't all down to him.

But - not to leave too much of a bad impression - he was bloody goodi,
for a long time. Had a better run than most.

Churchill, disastrously, took us onto the Gold Standard, taking away
control of our currency, and at the same rate that we had left the Gold
Standard in World War 1. This was a pure act of machismo leading to
deflation and depression, while the rest of the world was booming. WE
did the same thing by joining the ERM. If Blair had had his way we would
joined the Euro with the same disastrous consequences that were/are
visited on Greece, Italy, Ireland and Portugal.

The UK abandoned the Gold Standard finally 1st September 1931, blaming
it upon speculation against the pound, like it left the ERM in 1992. The
decision was made by the Bank of England in 1931 (Philip Snowdon was
Chancellor of the Exchequer).

Ireland and Greece at least (I don't know about Portugal) bought
the consequences on themselves. Greece lied about the state of its tax
revenues and Ireland let the Celtic Tiger run rampant and dodgy, there are
still unsellable properties of indeterminate ownership all over the country
and some of the court cases are still running.

Now Ireland has a (reasonably) healthy economy that was catching up
with Celtic Tiger rates (without all the dodgy deals) and instead of
ramping it up and celebrating there were serious talks about cooling it
down before the pandemic slowed things down again. Fiscal responsibility,
it's an addictive habit, one of the few good ones.

More importantly from the point of view of Irish people and
businesses it made it possible to trade with the whole of the Eurozone
without even thinking the term "exchange rate" or paying a fee to the
bankers for the privilege of paying someone in a different country. These
are disastrous consequences indeed and we're suffering terribly under them
here.

I got a bitcoining computer breadboard some years ago, and discovered
that that it really needed a 2000+ watt powersupply, so I dumped it

I knew a man who, in desperation, got a job on the North Sea Oil rigs as
a stand up comedian. The customers at that time were mostly Yorkshire
men. Yorkshire people have a completely different sense of humor than
the rest of humanity (Excepting germans, who have completely none).

When the customers were `NOT AMUSED', they would fling coins at the poor
comedian. He really dreaded the 50p coin of that time.

I think he is working on cruise ships now. It seems anyone can get jobs
on them. Full of overweight US divorcees looking for what they call a
good time.
