I gather that mining bitcoins now costs more in electricity than it
makes in bitcoins.

In the second half of the 1920's they were. Britain recovered from the
effects of the Wall Street crash far more slowly than the much of the
rest of the world. If there had not been a major boom in the 1920's
there would have been no Stock Market crash.

The second half of the 1930's saw a recovery for most of the world. It
took Britain a long time to recover. Nevile Chamberlain's (yes he) re-
armament programme is partly responsible for our recovery in the late
1930's.

I know I've said this many times before but my back-of-the-envelope
calculations a while ago came to the conclusion that there is no net
profit in Bitcoin. I think that the only way for a percentage of
people to make a profit out of it long term (other than trading it so
you make your slice on the transaction rather than the value of the
crypto) is to steal it or to put the other party in a transaction at a
disadvantage.[1] There are lots of different and imaginative ways of
stealing it ranging from theft of the electricity or the processor
cycles, to bursting into somebody's house wearing a mask and demanding
their password.

Nick
[1]ie: steal it.

I remember stories from back then about men in the US corn states that
lived in absolute poverty and had to join the US army. After Pearl
Harbour, the US government started spending money on rearmenent and that
started that country growing again, The soldiers returned home to find
booming communities, all because of Pearl Harbour attack.

If in blighty, I've been told that one of those industrial museum places (maybe Beamish?) you can go into the pub on site and buy beer using old pennies (change for a shilling?). Sadly I goov you have to buy the pennies 1st, and the exchange rate isn't 1:1.

Sorry can't find it or it doesn't happen any more:

Not now anyhow:

In many ways it resembles a ponzi scheme - the early players when
the calculations were easy got to make a lot of bitcoins which were then
made valuable by the later hordes.

AFAIK, the story was like this. In the temple, only jewish shekels
were allowed as offerings, so as Greek and Roman coins were in general
circulation, there was profit for moneychangers outside the temple
door in charging for exchanging the `pagan' money to shekels, which were
useful for offerings. Many people forget that Jesus was jewish and very
involved in internal politics. The Gospels never mention the people who
wrote the Dead Sea scrolls.

Thanks - I heard it for the first time today. It is indeed a quality

Gawd did you do that too?

I shudder to unforget how we placed pennies on the LNER express line
south of Hatfield. You could actually hear the front bogies jump as they
hit them.

Also being dared to lie on me back in the middle of the line and let an
express train pass over me. Thank gawd I unforgot that the carriage
toilets dumped straight on to the lines back then, and refused!

The other mad game was trying to drop stones down engines' smoke stacks
from footbridges.

Utterly stupid, but we woz just kid being led on by the big boys.

Didn't everybody ? But it was Deltics pulling passenger trains that
squished our pennies.

But not these, the closest we came was sitting under the bridge we
called the thunder bridge as the train went over.

It did not work under trolley bus wheels. Nice ride inside though, but
what ever you did, you did not run to hop on the platform as the trolley
bus departed.

Who didn't? The Push'n'pull between Upminster and Romford was pretty
useless for that, even in the days of the ickle tank-engine.

'Twas Atlantics for me, IIRC. Big black things, something like a 4.4.2
(?) with 'LNER' blazin^h^h^h^blazoned on the mobile coal bunker behind.
