It's starting to feel like Win 11, may be the new Vista.

I like Win 10, but every time MS try this sort of thing it makes me
think: why do I need Windows, as opposed to Ubuntu? What Windows only
apps do I rely on. So I make a list: Mainly I come up with Excel but
Libre Calc is useable, bizarre a Mac developed product tops the list.

I just can't think of anything else... I'm sure there must be things...

I tried Ubuntu on a old poor spec ram laptop recently in the form of
Bodhi Linux Standard install and was quite impressed.

8 didn't start well but I use 8.1 and have no issues with it, much prefer
it over 10 as at least I have some control.

Personally, I thought 7 was the best. I started with 3.1 on floppy
discs, and tried them all since.

I did try 10 but found it wanted control over what I could do with it,
so I went back to 7 again for a short while before I moved to linux.
I've never looked back since.

I have one windows box: a refurb HP with W10 pro, purely because Garmin
require a recent windows box to update their car satnavs. It's used for
nothing else. My greatest victory this last week was to permanently
disable the updates: last time around, it destroyed a critical boot-up
file while installing a year's worth of updates (that's how rarely it's
used :-} ) in one go. I *loathe* the user interface.

I've got Mint installed on everything except an ancient laptop (Lubuntu)
and our central "does everything" server (freebsd). That was a move some
years ago from XP. It's worked out just fine.

I'm puzzled about W11 *requiring* internet access. I occasionally use my
lappy as a recording studio - no internet possible away from home, so
presumably W11 would be a total non-starter for that.

Reading slightly between the lines, as there's not a lot of actual info:
Windows 11 Home requires a Microsoft account to create your initial
login. You can only do that if you have internet access.

11 Pro will support local logins. It's not known if 11 Home will support
local logins.
