Don't know if any cars here ever had that sort of system.
The Ranger my son had could connect to his home wifi when he was parked
in his drive and do updates so its possible that it might have also
downloaded data.

I doubt it. Laws are very different in the US compared to here.

At the moment, as far as I can see, there is nothing preventing the same
thing happening here.

Back in the 90s US GM cars could come with a cellular connection called
On-Star. The selling points were things like the On-star operator could
open the car if you locked yourself out, and, if the airbags went off,
the operator would call the emergency services ( that implied that they
knew where you were). Tesla cars get OTA software updates, I'd imagine
that would be over cellular too.

AFAIK MB had a similar system in some locations around the world but I
don't know of it ever working in Australia.
I don't see the loss of that system that they were complaining about in
the link as a loss as I don't like the idea of my car being tracked and
big brother being able to know where I have been, Google Maps on phones
can do that sort of thing so I've made sure that function on mine is
turned off.

My Ranger has a system Daryl mentioned (Fordpass). And yes, apparently
if you have a big enough stack that the airbags go off, it will notify
000 with your details and location. How it works, i dont know, as I very
rarely use it. I should say, how it works without a mobile phone...
seems like a good idea, but underdone in some ways.

"OnStar" was called "Holden Assist" here but was the same system.
Available in Statesman and Caprice with all the features you listed and
some like unauthorised entry alert. The operator knew where you were
through GPS satellite tracking.

I did the training for the system probably in the latter part of 90's.

Apart from the fact that we *already* have anti exclusion laws in place
to cover the automotive trade and have done for some years, and it
hasn't caused the kind of reaction here as referred to in the article.

Similar system in the Hyundai. You can "talk" to the car remotely using
the mobile app to do things like start the engine and set the aircon or
heater temp, but the car uses it's own commumications to do things like
get real time traffic updates for the satnav, or to alert the
authorities in the event of an accident.

The Ford system used in the Ranger is apparently supposed to be very good.
