Part of the long term plan was to install a sauna in the Mother of All
Sheds.

10+ years later it might happen.

I'm now looking on line and there are traditional steam saunas (electric
heater and stones for water to be poured on) or infra red (which I assume
is just an array of radiant heaters).

Any experience, pros, cons etc?

Also considering a steam room/cabinet/shower enclosure in place of the
current bath.

IMO: forget infrared, go for heater + stones.

Part of the sauna is a (cold) shower for afterwards. Ideally also a tub of cold
water to dip/immerse in after the quick shower rinse. This can be anything from
a IBC container to a cedar wood tub to a pond to a lake, ice layer optional.

If these drifts of mud are anywhere near storm outlets, then
i'll hazard a guess that the 'mud' will be laced with
something else.

There's a mobile sauna business operating on Worthing seafront,
using a repurposed twin horse box to provide the steam box, but
last saturday the group of people using it had to contend with
low tide and navigating an area of stones and rocks before
reaching the sea.
