Someone seems to have turned the volume down in the last year or
so.

Perhaps the average age of people using this NG is the group
most likely to have been affected by Covid ?

The selection of really nice 2nd hand HiFi stuff on the BHF
ebay website has noticibly increased in the last couple of years
which might also be a Covid side-effect.

Hmm, well, I still have old kit here, not mega old but certainly not
surround sound and touch screen stuff which are of no use to me. OK I do
have an Amazon Echo dot, connected but the Good old Denon tuner apmp has
done we well since 1999, replacing an earlier Pioneer which started to have
transistor and capacitor intermittency issues, then the dial fell to bits
and the bulbs kept on blowing, and despite its nice sound, the writing was
on the wall.
I do still have cassette decks, as I have many cassettes home recorded, but
I recon if somebody today made a good quality one based around Dbx and only
had Dolby playback, it would be great. The tape formulations by TDK and
Maxell were well good enough for 110db dynamics using DBX and I guess the
only issue was single tones could expose some noise, but nothing much at
all really. However with similar priced digital gear you get compromises
often audible in use of mp3 or sudden death clipping unless its one of the
new fangled true floating point devices.
I do have a Minidisc here, but to be honest you can still hear that its
compressed. An underlying grittiness even at the full speed.
Its far too complicated too, needing to finalise discs to let them be
removed and played elsewhere, what were they thinking at Sony?

Following your recommendation I signed up to Pink Fish. When I visited
the first thing I found was a flame war about the audible effects of
mains cables.

My feeling now is the audio is as good as it is ever going to be and
there is nothing more to be done about the quality.

That seems to be something we're stuck with forever. 8-] I generally
ignore it or pop up when I fancy to point out basic facts. However PFM now
has far more active positive content than usenet. e.g. the DIY section
helps people to make/repair kit. Inc helping people find compoents or
circuit boards for a project. And some of the engineers there are pretty
helpful. e.g. like 'Jez' (Arkless) who cheerfully dismiss the fantasies
about unobtainum, etc, and advise people on how to do their own repairs or
refurbs, but will do repairs or make up circuits for people.

Some of the dealers are also very helpful, and not just there to sell.

FWIW one Australian dealer sent me a Meridian DAC FOC because I was
investigating MQA. It let me examine and document what emerges from an MQA
DAC. It was very helpful in distinguishing mere reality from claims. It
also showed that the particular DAC had a design quirk that proved useful.
It leaves MQA decoding 'on' - i.e.free running if you play non-MQA material
right after MQA material. That let me measure the effect MQA has on the
output.

> My feeling now is the audio is as good as it is ever going to be and

That can be the case, but isn't invarably so in practice, alas. The obvious
challenge being speakers and rooms.

Despite the bickering over things like 'cables' the technically informed
input is quite good at times. And the moderators stamp on bad behaviour and
get people generally "play nicely" or get barred.

Also a place for people to buy 2nd hand LPs and CDs if they wish.

**Does it allow advertising? If so, then I foresee problems. Here in Oz,
we have a rather large audio group called Stereo.net.au. I was a
prolific contributor for a number of years. However, due to a post or
two, where I pointed out the stupidity of buying expensive mains cables,
I was banned forever. It seems I may have offended some advertisers. The
most disturbing part about my transgression was that I was not informed
of the specific reasons for that punishment.

Moderation should always be a 'light touch' approach, IMO.

Are these services web based or mailing list based. Anything web based is a
real pain to use for me, as almost every one of them has a completely
different interface and often very few keyboard shortcuts or navigational
aids like headers and the like.

On PFM the requirement is to 'play nicely' in *personal* terms. But you can
say that a lot of what people claim about magic cables, etc, etc, is
drivel. And people often do explain this, erm, politely. I've done so, and
am not alone. Get Jez going on this and see a fairly blunt sort of
'polite'. :-)

> Moderation should always be a 'light touch' approach, IMO.

Yes, so far as Tony and his deligated Mods are concerned, they try not to
moderate at all.

It allows advertising on two levels. One is the ads that appear on-page.

The other is that there is an area for dealers to advertise and answer
queries. (The dealers also read and contribute on other parts. That's how I
got offerred the DAC I mentioned.)

Both forms of ads are actually avoidable. The on-page ads rely on
scripting, so if you use a browser that is 'light' and/or can switch off
scripting you won't see the first. And can simply ignore the dealers area.
That said, Tony wishes people to let their browser show the ads as that
helps him get some income and keep the forum live.

The PFM forum is very well moderated. Tony is a UKHHSoc member and won't
allow bad behaviour, threats, etc. People who do that get banned. Any nasty
postings get removed and people are told to 'play nicely'.

Tony is actually primarily a buyer/seller of 2nd hand CDs, etc, and runs
the forum as a sideline as he is interested in Hi-Fi and music. So for
those who are interested its also a way to get some LPs. The forum grew out
him running his music shop.

Put it this way; I've only ever joined two web forums (fora?). One is PFM.
The other is run by RO Open to facilitate the development of the RO
operating system that I use.

In general I suspect web forums would be an unusable nightmare for a reader
who can't see clearly. I dunno about PFM in this respect, but the pages are
relatively basic HTML and if you disable scripting in a browser it works
without the 'whizz wheels' like ads.

One reason I like it is the pages are less cluttered than other forums I've
seen. More text per sq cm and less 'furniture' to avoid falling over!

Here's a typical page from the 'classic' section of PFM. Can your software
get it to be readable for you?

https://pinkfishmedia.net/forum/threads/sme-3009-series-1-cartridge-options.267427/

I've deliberately chosen a page with some images inserted by the poster to
check and find out if they mess things up. FWIW because I have scripting
off I find that links to you tube don't work directly, but I rarely care
about that. :-)

Other forums may well be hopelessly constipated by needless whizz-wheel
code and graphic garbage. PFM is one of the more 'basic' forums I've
encountered. One reason I prefer it. But I only have poor eyesight, which
is good enough for me to use standard browsers, etc.

Entry times and prices
08:30am: £20 :-(
09:30am: £12
10:30am: £7

No mention of free entry after a certain time though.

The sellers should be paying the costs of running it surely ?

No its full of files called img and no description. I can read the names of
the contributors with h, but not apparently the subject. Some links seem to
have labels, some not. I think the only way to make sense of suchpages would
be to get a person to sit with me and describe the relationships between
blind navigation and sighted views of the pages. if the so called tab view
is not in line with logic for the sighted viewer, then it would need a
mental plan to be memorised to make muscle memory figure out the correct
and shortest route to somewhere from somewhere else.

"Trolleys

Sainsburys have politely requested that our stallholders do not use
their trolleys for loading and unloading stalls. At some previous events
they have kept their trolleys locked until the store opened at 10:30am.
Therefore please ensure you bring your own trolley for loading and
unloading your stall(s)." :-)

Looking at the Stallholders page I see many 'repurposed' supermarket
trolleys in use !

Which is sort of followable as plain text, albeit with some line markup and
a specific format that is tedious as plain text. I'll ask Tony if he's
considered this.

But we don't use it as text. a commonly held misconception. we rely on the
same markers as you do, but navigated to by tab, b for button h for heading,
and if all else fails searching the page for a string. There are also
landmarks, so some active areas can be stopped from affecting the static
ones, and we can also detect forms and edit areas, on which a screenreader
moves from interacting with objects to editing them of course, or moving
things like combo boxes or sliders etc.
The whole idea is that a good web design will always also have hot keys
defined for certain places, just like many programs have had for some time.
Sadly this is not very well implemented and the object navigation keys tend
to be thrown together in a totally different order to how it looks on page.
I see comments on some forums like click the big red button to the left
near the bottom. The usual problem is that its not left since cursors go up
and down, and often its a link with no text other than a name button, which
means it would not show up by pressing b or shift b a few times.

It will generally cost them money simply to turn up and be there. As it is,
they can also sell via the internet - fleabay, etc.

The higher rates are for the vistors who may intend to spend a lot (who may
in some cases be dealers who didn't come to sell). Later on, it will be for
those who mostly come to look, I suspect.

Sadly, none of these 'jumbles' ever happen near where I live, so it is
effectivly impossible for me to ever get to them. I have more than once
tried to get a 'contact details' list of the dealers, and the things they
sell. But no-one has ever obliged. Maybe this is because such a list aids
buying and selling *bypassing* audiojumbles. Maybe it is because no one
cares if you can't get to them, so don't buy because you can't spot
something you *would* buy.

Can you give a URL for documents that give an outline description of the
assumptions made about page format, and is the software to render this
for you open source? Not an area I know much about, but ...

I'm wondering if there is something that may be done to aid this. Pink
Fishes are quite a decent group. Many are knowledgeable and helpful.
The problem may be with the page 'layout' code which is pretty
fiddly - alas common in recent years. But the layout is at least
logical, so should be possible for a program to make sense of it
for navigation, etc.

FWIW Tony deliberately trys to make the layout code as basic as possible
and to maximise the content/cruft ratio. Although that is hampered a bit by
his need to have the ads to help pay him towards being able to do this.

I object to having to pay just to get *in* when there be nothing
worth buying. Maybe they should make sellers add a percentage onto
their prices when they make a sale and pass this percentage to the
organiser. Browsers and thwarted buyers then do not get fleeced
just for attending.

Oh, I have no idea really, as its all down to the API the browser exposes to
screenreaders I think. I'm not sure where to point you at, but I'm sure
there are technical resources out there, but the multi layers of it are a
bit beyond me. As long as they all behave we would not have to know as long
as page authoring uses the correct accessible guidelines.
