testing some old Skylake PCs, I ran memtest and it froze at 26%
So I thought this was ready for the scrap bin. Then I tested the other, it also froze at 26%. They have different brand mainboards and different brand of RAM. Both the same i5-6500. No overclocking in BIOS.
This is the memtest that is in the Ubuntu boot options.
Neither has a DVD drive for me to try standalone memtest.

You can download a version (inc a free one) for USB.

And seems to work better. There's a thread I recently started here,
"memory conundrum", that looks like a similar problem. Two new sticks of
memory, two slots. Any combination of sticks and slots would freeze
(needing a full reset or power down) after a second or less at ~35%,
although the original memory ran fine.

The USB version ran for IIRC 4 hours without a hitch.

I got memtest86 and it works okay.
The other one memtest86+ only supports up to Haswell or Bulldozer. A new release delay due to COVID-19.
But I would think that only means identifying the CPU. I am sure it would use a basic instruction set and should function on any x86-64 CPU.

It might need to know about cache sizes and so on. Do you need to
identify the CPU to find out those things?
