I hear that Judy Bennet (unlike Charles Collingwood) is definitely
retiring from Ambridge. Only time will tell whether Shula will come
home with a different voice or whether she will establish a life for
herself away from Ambridge and only be heard of, in her absence, in future.

I thought they were both withdrawing but I'm not as up to date with these
(or many other) things these days (and have not yet read your link).

Personally I'd be quite happy not to hear from her again.

Whereas, I first heard ‘Shula’ in BBC Schools Radio programmes in the late
50’s, or early 60’s. Mine Dew, you should have seen the look of horror on
her face when I went up onto the stage on one of their evenings to perform
sound FX for them during a short sketch; I think ‘Shula’ was sh*t scared I
was going to clobber the microphone placed to capture the sound FX. There
was an effect where ‘Brian’ felt it hadn’t been loud enough, so I performed
it right next to the mic the second time. I’m sure ‘Shula’ didn’t let that
happen again anywhere else! (They weren’t aware of what I did for my day
job!)

I saw an interview with Charles Collingwood recently which suggested
that he hoped to carry on as Brian indefinitely and implied he hoped to
only leave Ambridge feet first.

On the other hand, it's a long time since we've heard anything of Jenny,
leading to concern, in various corners of the interweb, for Angela
Piper's health. It sounds as if Brian may be in danger of losing both
his wives, in Ambridge, at least.

I can't imagine Charles Collingwood withdrawing somehow. The character
he play, Brian, doesn't have much of a reputation for withdrawing
either.

Oh, so did I, she played a lot of small boys on the radio, which was
slightly confusing at times.

Speaking personally I am very sad that Judy Bennett has decided to
depart - her pre-husband days with Caroline were interesting listening.

To a large extent I feel the team have played around with her character
to an excessive amount since Mark's death and whilst I know people
change as they age I am not convinced by the actions of the last few
years and indeed redeveloping the Stables at the same time as making
plans to adopt the Church plus her treatment of poor Alistair seem so
wrong for the person of those earlier years.

I wonder if Judy feels the same?

As the eldest descendant of the Dan and Doris lineage I believe the gap
will be huge and a revoicing seems unlikely - all of which is a huge shame.

Perhaps it is time that ‘The Archers’ came to an end and was allowed to die

When I commenced reading umra a certain late umrat sought the removal of
the Beetle for the way she had changed the programme but it did settle
down. We cannot blame the Editor for covid but many of the other
upheavals of recent years have changed the programme irredeemably in my
view - the emphasis is on "drama" not "rural" or "character" and the
importation of TV approach to drama (being unsure who is speaking
because you can see them) and raised voices has undermined the basis of
wireless drama.

"It is The Archers, Jim - but not as we know it."

I agree with the reasons you gave above; I wouldn’t blame anyone in

Sadly, yes. I did like the feeling of living ina small village among
farmers.

I am trying to remember how I felt about Shula before she romanced
Usha's partner. Iwent off her then, even though she was being
comforted as a one-parent mum with a sick child. And then when she
settled with Snappy I was more pro her but then the dumping of Snappy
and later wish to continue to share his family and snoop into it,
hating to be left out, and I felt her wish to vicar was more that too,
really put me off her again.
