I have heard from a friend who took a boat trip in Varanasi that the river is cleaner than before.
The BJP Govt. must have done something.
The Ganges is only a river by appearance - She is the Goddess Ganga flowing to mitigate the thirst of the Indians.
Indians should make every effort to keep the river super-clean and indeed such was the case for thousands of years.
Recent americanisation (wrappings, waste, industrial toxins) has caused all sorts of pollution which the river carries.
Sad.
The more genuinely Hindu the Indians become, the cleaner everything will be.

I live in Australia, so cannot comment. My friends and relatives in India seem well-off.

That may be. I cannot say. What does cause toxicity is industrial waste. In my time the worst offenders were the tanning industries.
My relatives say that the authorities have become much more strict these days about pollution issues.
