Took the KTM for an outing today at the usual circuit.

In only the third lap of the first session I was overtaken on a
hairpin, and as the other bike accelerated towards a jump, something
black flicked up towards me.

Because it was on a low trajectory, it missed my helmet peak and
smacked with an almighty bang straight into my goggles, pinging both
sides of the lens out of the frame so they flapped loose.The pain was
indescribable. I immediately slowed and pulled off the circuit at a
convenient point just past the jump, where for a few seconds all I
could do was sit slumped, swearing repeatedly. A certain wetness
around the chin area indicated a serious nosebleed - there was now
blood all over the fuel tank and some spattered on my kit.

It actually doesn't look that noticeable, just a little swollen, but
boy did it hurt!

I managed to complete a two and a half more sessions without incident.

This on top of a weird foot pain that hit last night, probably
something like gout, but oddly on the side of my foot, so I was also
hobbling around the paddock a bit.

Worse to come, I daren't drink alcohol in case it causes the foot pain
to flare up again.

Interesting. It started while I was sitting watching TV, with the
feeling that my trainer was too tight, so both with and without.

MX boots helped because my foot wasn't flexing so much as I walked,
but whatever it was, it's mostly cleared up now, so wibble.

Footwear? Watching TV? Do you live in a field? Slippers, maybe, or even
socks, but shoes?

Doesn't sound like my experience of gout either; big toe swells up joint bright
red. Unbelievable discomfort even from the bed sheets just resting on it.

I suppose it could be good-old fashioned arthritis. I guess you're an appropriate
age for that now.

Or if you want to be swanky how about plantar fasciitis?

Exactly my thoughts. As soon as I enter the house (assuming I'm wearing
any footwear in the first place) I'm barefoot.

Yes, my experience is focussed pain at the site, and tenderness to the
touch. The gout sites I've had so far are the classic big toe joint
(where your bunion will happen), heel, and central on the top (that was
an odd one). Now on allopurinol to prevent it happening (almost always)
and with a supply of colchicine in case it does happen again (absolutely
brilliant for goutbusting).

We may be in the minority. Mind you, in summer, I don't wear *anything*
indoors. Or even outdoors if it's private. Between 35 and 45ºC I really
don't see the point of clothes.

Wrong place, I think. I believe that's the heel. Very odd, whatever it
was: it built up withiin a couple of hours to an inability to walk
properly and even lying down was a constant burning ache. Pretty much
gone now.

That was kind of how my first attack started - I was sitting through a presentation at work and had to take my shoe off because my foot was hurting too much with it on. By that evening I couldn't wear a sock, let alone a shoe.

Flexing has nothing to do with it. Pressure is the problem, usually on the big toe joint. At first, anyway. Once it kicks in properly, simply having a foot becomes the problem. If it's gout, anyway.

You might want to get your uric acid levels checked as a precaution, because if they're high, it's just a matter of time, and if they're not high, then you don't need to worry.
