I see that John Lewis Broadband is being discontinued. Their service is
provided by PlusNet, but it also turns out that PlusNet discontinued their
email provision some time in the last 12 months. I'd like to avoid gmail, so,
who provides broadband and still provides POP3 email services?

I'm with PlusNet and my PN email address still works, may be worth
checking as their service is excellent as long as you can manage a
Yorkshire accent

Many providers stopped offering POP3 already.
In a world where useres have usually more than one device to access mail
IMAP offers options that facilitate e-mailing considerably.

yep, and they can still download email via imap the same way they did
with pop.

Mine only does POP3 and when I looked into it, I decided I really can't be
arsed to add IMAP to it.

Talking to a bod at the PlusNet technical support line this morning, he said
he believed the email service was going away but had no date for me. I take it
you've heard nothing.

They haven't said anything to me about it. I see they no longer offer
the option of the tariff that I am on to new customers, but that seems
to be because they are dropping all new services on lines that aren't
rented as part of the package from Plusnet (my line is BT).

Their package descriptions don't seem to mention email at all either.

I have used GMX as a back up for my other accounts (GMail/ntlworld)for
many years with no issues at all.
Its aimed at Mobile devices - but I use it in Apple mail on my Macs just
fine

It is only a back-up on IMAP and for "specific" uses so cannot really
comment on functionality etc.. but may be worth a look - IIRC it is
European based

I've no idea, I'm with Plusnet here, and looking though their forums and
my account settings, there seems to be no mention of POP being
discontinued as yet.

Their settings page is here if that helps at all, and still details POP3:

https://www.plus.net/help/email-guides/how-to-set-up-plusnet-email/

Personally I went with iCloud mail many years ago, although I do have a
PlusNet account running, it does frequently have errors popping up. It
can be trickier than usual to set up - they tend to use the
alias@username.plus.net kind of configuration, so you can't just bung
your email address into a setup box.

I also use a Gmail for a backup, but to be honest, that's only now used
if I really have to log into something Google (such as YouTube or
Drive). I also have an Outlook account, using a spare iCloud address as
my username (just to use Notes and OneDrive). All of that is just setup
for a 'just in case' scenario though.

I use it for almost 20 years. Probably the best of the free providers.
IMAP and POP. Very powerful filtering possible. Forwarding. And is under
the European GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) by the EU.
