It's possible, but cars occasionally spontaneously combusted long before
electric vehicles were a thing, so it's a bit early to blame lithium ion
batteries.

There's no question that Lithium Ion batteries have caused fires. They
lead to the grounding of the Boeing 787 after a number of battery fires
until the design was modified to be able to contain such fires.

But fires happen for other reasons, and non-EV cars contain both a
flammable fuel, and the electricity required to ignite it.

Sylvia.

Batteries are disconnected when they are on a ship AFAIK. That's not to
say that some goose can't leave a lead flapping around which may
potentially cause a short or a spark.

Lithium-ion batteries can fail and self-ignite even if the main bank is
disconnected from the vehicle and when you have thousands of cells
crammed into a battery pack such as they are in an EV and one goes up it
sets off a chain reaction. When that happens you can only realistically
hope to control the spread, not the fire itself.
