The article is actually about "new" services from Spain, not the
existing domestic services. I put new in quotes because I thought such

It also talks about “the new route to Scotland” using “hybrid locomotives”.
Presumably they’re talking about the Class 88 unless someone knows better.
I don’t suppose they’ll be using a 950hp diesel over the Highland main
line, though.

Thread from last September:

train-service-begins-thanks-to-tesco.html>

As for this recent story, first it revisits the Spain-Barking container
trains[1], then suddenly changes gear to:

"Tesco is now working to roll out four more rail routes across
the UK, including one linking London to Scotland.

Is that route 1: Spain-Barking, and routes 2-5: Barking-UK (with one of
the UK destinations being Scotland)?

"The new route to Scotland, which will be ready later this year,
will use hybrid locomotives.

Not sure what this means. Bi-mode of some sort?

[1] Original article said 15 trains a week, new one says "five weekly"
presumably five-a-week. For eight months = 160 trains, 35,000
'loads', 280 containers per train. Nope, that doesn't compute.

Existing services from Daventry to Scotland end up at Grangemouth, then
trucked the 20miles back to Livingston. So it could just be a "last
mile" diesel (which is probably what that class of loco was intended for
anyway).

When you say Livingston do you mean Mossend at Bellshill? That seems to be
where the Highland Tesco workings originate at the southern end. The train
in the video above was 4H47 and there’s a return 4D47. At least some of
the lines through Mossend are wired.

No, that's 20 miles to the west.

The Tesco depot is: https://goo.gl/maps/Refs25jqXCLbvCB37 and while it's
right next to the M8, doesn't appear to benefit from a railway siding.

If you check Google Maps you can see lots of Stobart containers, the ones
that Tesco use, at Mossend and none at Grangemouth. You can also see that
the line from Mossend to Grangemouth, the most direct route from the south
to Grangemouth, is wired all the way so no need for last mile anything.

Do you have any headcodes or RTT links Tesco trains to Grangemouth?

Perhaps the press report which said the original Tesco containers went
from Daventry to Grangemouth is out of date.

Don't forget the "last mile" at the Dagenham end (or possibly other
unwired lines in the Southeast). I haven't studied the map with a fine
toothed comb. But I did look at Streetview near Grangemouth, and
couldn't see wires at the far end.

No.

I don't know whether this is a useful contribution to the discussion.
Apologies if it's not.

I live in Dundee, and on my afternoon walks see a daily container
train heading towards the station having coming from the Perth
direction. As far as I know, freight trains are not permitted to use
the Tay Bridge. The train usually has about eight Tesco containers,
and about the same number of Morrison containers. There are often
tankers in the make-up as well. There are no freight handling
facilities in Dundee, so presumably the train is going to Aberdeen,
and then possibly on to Inverness.

There must be a return working, but I have never seen that.

Not unless they have a time machine. Those are apparently not scheduled
for delivery until 2023, and the service begins "later this year", which
last time I looked was 2021.

Just because the 93s are not yet here doesn't mean that's what they
will use in the future. The article is as much about plans as what
they are doing now and in he immediate future.

Yes, we know all about their "plans", but history shows they tend to
fall short (see the number of trains that actually resulted in 2006, and
also since announcing the Spanish service).

It could be a very significant loco, the first electric loco with a very usable power rating away from the wires. The
role of the battery is not to provide independent power, but to boost the acceleration when using diesel. So it provides
a temporary boost to diesel power to deliver enough oomph to get up to a useful speed, with the diesel then having
enough power to maintain the speed. So it's much more than the class 88's last mile capability.

I'd be quite surprised if it couldn't trundle around at low speed on the
batteries alone. You'd think that would be a selling point in non electrified
depots when it just needs to be moved a short distance and you don't want to
faff around starting the engine.

Yes, it probably can, but that's not the selling point.
