M$ support for W10 will end in 2025, but literally millions of PC owners
worldwide will be unable to upgrade to W11!

Microsoft has always made operating systems that require one to buy
new computers, then they can sell another operating system with it.
Never a upgrade though always a downgrade.
Best operating system was "Win 3.11", been downgraded ever since.

yes. that was the one most ppl were happy with. W10 is becoming rather
bloated now. and M$ told us it would be the final iteration of windoze.

but computer gurus are telling us it runs fine on lower spec computers
than M$ is mandating for it. but the big concern is the cessation of
support for W10, which M$ had said would be the final version

Well supposably to install it requires at least a TPM 2.0 security
module, and UEFI BIOS, which eliminates some systems that might
meet the basic CPU/RAM requirements.

I'm sure that like Windows 10 it will just keep gaining more and
more bloat through updates, slowing down all but the fastest (or
just the most freshly installed) PCs.

I guess they didn't actually say that in a contract anywhere then.

In other news, here's a floppy disk image for booting a current
version of Linux on PCs with a 486 and up:
https://pappp.net/?p=45560

The download link is actually a little wrong, this works:
https://pappp.net/misc/floppinux_i486.img

Only the beta version though, same for most new existing "Win10"
computers, support will be stopped when Win11 is made official.

the biggest issue as I understand it is that M$ has set a cut off level
for processor types. it even includes computers still currently on sale.
did you watch the video?

yeh. the worst thing that ever happened for computing is that windows
became the dominant operating system

I don't usually watch videos posted here, but I've read articles
that mentioned the CPU limitations and the comments there proposed
that they might be more like suggestions than a flat-out "won't
install unless CPU = blah blah blah". But some systems apparantly
can't have their TPM 1.0 (or none at all) upgraded to TPM 2.0 using
an add-on module (most laptops included, I'm guessing), which I
expect indirectly places a hard limit on the CPUs that will run
Win11.

I did "sudo dd if=floppinux_i486.img of=/dev/fd0" on Linux
(DON'T get the "of=/dev/fd0" bit wrong). I knew of various
programs for Windows when I used that regularly. RawWrite comes
to mind, but that seems to have been MS-DOS. Anyway, searching
for RawWrite brings up tons of equivalent programs for (probably
old versions of) Windows.

Boots this Pentium 1 - not tried on a 486 yet.

This might be a little more interesting if you're not used to the
Linux command-line, the fix for it not working on pre-i686 CPUs has
apparantly been applied:

Sure, I use The Ultimate Boot CD and System Rescue CD for recovery
sort of tasks (with a USB CD drive for laptops without a CD drive).
On old 90s PCs where booting from CDs is unreliable/impossible, The
All In One Boot Floppy is more useful for that sort of thing
anyway:
http://schierlm.users.sourceforge.net/bootdisk/

Floppinux is mostly just for fun. Unless perhaps you need to
run one simple Linux program on an old PC which is compatible with
some unusual old hardware. That would be pretty rare.

95 was good for its day but that day is long since gone. Same with XP,
7, 8, 8.1 also.
