My grandmother used to have me spray greenfly with soapy water in the days
before washing-up liquids.
Over the years I have tended to use commercial sprays, latterly 'green'
(and costly).
Does washing-up liquid do the job?
I ask because my nasturtiums are covered in blackfly on the back of the
leaves. Spraying with the small bottled sprayer is not only awkward, but
expensive. I have a 1 gallon lance sprayer that would do the job if
washing-up liquis works.

Yes, it works but it's only temporary, especially if ants are farming
the aphids (green or black) as they encourage and protect them from
things which eat the aphids. The only thing that works for more than a
day or two is a systemic insecticide (although you might want to avoid
that if you are eating the nasturtium leaves or flowers!). Not that the
only currently approved systemic insecticide (acetamiprid) is much use IMHO.

Only effective as a contact spray and works a bit better if there is a
trace of oil in the mix (unlicensed use but harmless components).

For ornamentals you are better off with a systemic insecticide so that
anything that sucks their sap dies!
Alas aphids are immune to many of the permitted pesticides these days.
