I've just had my first SSD fail, a WD Blue dated 2018, so bad that the
image I took with Acronis screwed up the SSD I planned to use as a
replacement :-(

The replacement has allowed me to install 8.1 after cleaning it off with
diskpart and it seems to be running OK, first clean install for ages,
forgotten how to do it!

Roll on Mac Mini M1....

A lot of Apple stuff has everything soldered to the motherboard. On the
M1, is the SSD replaceable, even?

No, if it breaks you send the butler to the Apple Bar to replace it :-)

No warning from any software that you used to test it before failure?

Warning signs, yes.

It was on a Windows PC that I was going to use as a stopgap while I make
the transition to (or is it from) the dark side. The PC has been out of
use for a while and it seemed a bit sluggish so I ran AS SSD Benchmark on
the SSD and its performance was dire. I then ran chkdsk /f on next reboot
and reran the test and it was back up to about 500 Mb/s seq read which is
about right, but on the basis that data is more important than a groat or
two I imaged it - and it was slow. The image went on to the new SSD but it
wouldn't boot and nor would the old one when I swapped back so I
reinstalled on to the replacement SSD.

The 500 GB is still under warranty and I am running WD DLGDIAG on it, WD
says the program is deprecated and replaced by its Dashboard but I
couldn't find a test on that and it says the SSD is OK. We shall see.

OK. I have a Samsung enterprise SSD in my desktop.
Samsung 960GB SSD 845DC EVO SATA 6Gbps Solid State Drive (MZ-7GE960EW)
CrystalDiskInfoPortable says "generic vendor specific" 99.
I thnk it means that 99% life.
Just put into my Dell XPS l502X:
Micron 5200 Pro 1.9TB SSD 2.5" SATA III.
CrystalDiskInfoPortable says 100% life.

I am worried that how long each will last.

It passed the test, although I think the group has expressed some
scepticism about manufacturers' tests in the past.

Agree, I had a Seagate 1TB hard drive fail. WD DLGDIAG said it was
fine, but Seagate Seatools for Windows said it was on its last legs.
As did CrystalDiskInfoPortable due to it reporting
HD S.M.A.R.T. information. CHKdsk said that it could not finish
because there were no more spare allocation units.

Luckily I got all the files transferred to another drive before it
stopped working.
