No, but they were well made and in small quantities. Because of that
they were never cheap but I suspect they have now become 'cult' items.

I would like to know why the BBC possessed so many video
cassette recorders and players. Loads of Sony Betamax
recorders too.

The record decks mentioned by the OP look as though they
are earthquake-proof, complete with their own very-solid
looking floor-mounted stands.

The ones I noticed were all digital Betamax, not analogue. They are also
selling some cameras of the same format. At the beginningof the digital
era, these gave better quality than even high band analogue such as U-Matic.

The ones I wuold be interested in are the DV-Cam recorders, but it
wouo,d cost me far more to go and fetch them than I'd pay for the lot.

As all the equipment is from their archive department, they were
probably copying the digital stuff to hard drive as quickly as possible,
one operator can deal with a number of streams being copied at once, and
the machines were relatively cheap.

I remember, at Thames TV, seeing EMT turntables in the skip. No one wanted

Eh? Betamax was analogue. Panasonic similar¶was MII. Both were used to
replace the earlier C Format 1" reel to reel. U-Matic was only ever a news
format.

Cassette video recorders were used as a sound only digital recorder by
recording the digital audio as a video signal, though.

Digi-Beta was the Sony pro digital tape format - and very good to.

They are extremely heavy - I know because I have had to move one. The
direct drive motor is a curious affair, being driven by a very low
frequency four-phase oscillator that really needs to be set up with a
twin-beam oscilloscope.

I have a slightly non working Betamax machine if anyone wants one.
It is worth realising that many Sony Betamax machines could be paired with
a digital box to record and play very good sounding digital content.
Now hey they used these and not DAT, I'm not sure, cost probably.

The reason for the digital to video conversion box was that they hadn't
invented DAT yet.

The reason for using Betamax tapes was that Betamax had a better video
bandwidth than VHS.

The problem now is that some very important masters now only exist on
the Betamax tapes, nobody is making the heads any more, and the expected
head life of the entire world stock of new old stock heads is less than
the amount of tape that needs to be transcribed.
