North East Lincolnshire Council has hailed its e-bike loan scheme from this summer as a huge success.

There's already a sizeable waiting list for people wanting to take part in the two-week trial. James Borrill was just one of the people to already try out the bikes - he was extremely happy and even decided to move onto the Wheels to Work Scheme for the future - a scheme that aims to help more people get access to work, education and training, by loaning eligible applicants a 49cc or 110cc scooter or electric bike.

James had previously travelled to work by car. However, he's committed to travelling more sustainably, whilst also saving money on petrol.

“E-bikes have changed my life!” said James. “I was always intrigued to find out how effective an e-bike would be, but due to how expensive they were to purchase I struggled to find out, until I found this scheme.

“I was completely blown away with how useful they are. It’s amazing during the sunny weather and I would argue it’s just as fast as a car once you make it through the traffic lights etc. My happiness and wellbeing have improved significantly from this as well, which is an added bonus.”

Cllr Lynsey McLean was another participant in the trial. She added: “I wanted to use my car less and instead use something that was more economical and better for the environment. I also wanted to get a bit more active and try losing some weight as I found myself relying on my car a lot, and the e-bike scheme seemed a perfect solution.

“I was a bit nervous at first as I wasn’t sure if I could adapt to the e-bike, but I had a practice ride at the Grimsby Cycle Hub before loaning it out and already thought it was really good then - I couldn’t wait to take it out properly! I found myself using my car a lot less during this time and overall had a really positive experience with the e-bike.”

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “I am delighted this scheme has been such a huge success with our residents of North East Lincolnshire. It shows that we have a community that really cares about doing their bit for the environment, while also getting out and active.”

Without managing to mention usage rates, income from the scheme, or the
costs involved.

If the council are serious about people making the switch to bicycles, electric or otherwise, they really need to up their game re infrastructure. A white line in the middle of the pavement is useless (if that is safe why isn't it okay down Victoria Street?).

An on road cycle lane serves no point if motorists can park in it (Laceby Road, Clee Road, Weelsby Road, North Sea Lane etc). Make it safe to cycle and watch the uptake

It might be not so much uptake as re-routing.

Much faster than a car - you don't get stuck in jams.

“…during sunny weather…” suggests there might be some second-thinking when
the rains start.

There's only one country in the world where bicycles are mandated to have number plates. North Korea is not generally considered somewhere to aspire to.
