Nobody would have noticed that last week's PWB post from me had some
text from the previous week carelessly appended to the end of it if I
hadn't pointed it out.

Play:
--=--

Elden Ring (PS5) - So the Mountaintop of the (frozen solid) Giants is
picturesque and ominous and full of wonder, but I also feel my interest
in the setting and the narrative waning significantly. There's two major
bosses in this area, a human who has big area-of-effect spells and too
many summon buddies, and a big giant who can one-hit kill you with giant
snowballs. I've run out of other places to explore and level up in, so I
may be approaching the poiht where I'm comfortable abandoning the game.

Dragon Warrior III (GBC) - Oh, I have to form a party? That's very
Wizardry-esque, having to run off to the tavern to receruit mercenaries
and trustworthy comrades-in-arms. I hope I have a longer attention span
than normal.

Cotton Guardian Force Saturn Tribute (NSW/PS4) - Nope! Danmaku on two
different platforms! This is perfect emulation and the addition of a
tank shooter on top of two cute witch concepts is just weird enough to
be worth the import. I wish I hadn't gotten the limited edition that
came with soundtracks and giant posters and a teacup of all things.

Senran Kagura Burst Renewal (PS4) - The actual game title has funny
punctuation in it but I'm not bothering with all that. This is, believe
it or not, a redo of the first 3DS game but in 3D because the original
game was sort of a side-scrolling brawler. And now that I know all that
the whole of the series makes so much more sense to me, because I
approached the previous two games (Estival Versus and Shinovi Versus, if
you can keep them straight) more as go-right-until-boss rather than the
free-form open world games I took them for originally. I need to get the
Vita out and see if the other two games make more of an impact on me
now.

World Class Leaderboard Golf (GG) - It's exactly like my memory of the
Commodore version of the game. Takes forever to draw in the 3D view of
the golf course as seen from whatever position you've taken, and once
you've input all the variables you're powerless to do anything but watch
as your ball goes somewhere you didn't mean for it to go. If only there
were more realism in golf simulation.

Great Golf (SMS) - Hey, who's got two thumbs and just bought every 8-bit
golf game in existence? This is such a surprise, because you have to
position your feet and you have to know the actual range of the clubs
instead of counting on the game to provide those maths to you. It's
ridiculously challenging in a positive way that I'm not sure I'd be
receptive to at any other point in my life.

Want:
--=--

More time - I spent some time with a bunch of other Gameboy and Game
Gear carts on the Analogue Pocket, and I wish I had the energy to tell
you all about it.

Hm. You're right.

I PLAED A GAEM

I played an old game. It has pirates. It is called Scurvy Scallywags and
has been around for many years now on iThings, but turns out to also run
on my M1 MacBook as an iOS app hurrah! So I have been matching many
threes and shunting my player character pirate around the screen killing
off skellies and pirates and bosses and picking up ship parts and
whatnot.

The music is incredible. The sea shanties are rough as old dogs.

I PLAED ANOTHER GAEM TOO BUT ONLY FOR A FEW MINITES

Facebook sent me a "hey have some free money to spend on our Quest
store" £10 so I bought What The Bat, the sequal to everyone's favourite
game What The Golf. Then I spent two hours getting the Quest2 updated
and converting my facebook account over to a meta account and re-logging
it in, which was a very boring and stupid game. Then I played it for
about ten minutes and it's exactly the sort of high-quality nonsense you
should expect from the What The Golf team, and I loved it.

It also has an elephant. Sometimes the elephant is a surprise.

To be fair though, play, want, invisible gorilla, bin, expenditure...
it was a pretty standard PWB post in retrospect.

> Play:

Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4) - the PSN sale price on this was low enough that
it would almost have been rude not to get it finally. I can't really
compare the games given how long it's been since I played the original
Yakuza 2, but it's hard to imagine it not being a big improvement.
It's been decent so far, though I've found myself doing probably too
many of the side-missions - so this might be a case like Yakuza 5
where I end up ruining the pacing by doing that. It's probably just as
well that it's a replay of sorts.

> Want:

Lego Marvel('s) Kang the Conqueror (PS4) - well, they already did a DC
supervillain game, so I suppose a Marvel one was to be expected. I
feel like this game might go largely unnoticed, but I suppose that
might depend on how popular Marvel games still are - given the
moderately obscure character involved, and e.g. that Avengers game not
being received terribly well IIRC. Also, I really don't like the
camera angle in the most recent Lego games, and that could be a
problem... in theory at least.

> Bin:

Still sucking horribly at Virtua Fighter 2 (in YK2). For me this just
seems to be one of those great constants of life.

There's an anecdotal tale of a student who observed that his instructor
read only the first and last paragraphs of any writing assignment, and
over time this prankster inserted what was essentially an entire science
fiction novel into the moddle of all his graded submissions without it
ever affecting his ability to pass the class.

I assure you that you are playing correctly. I think the greatest
innovation of the Yakuza games is that the pacing is set by the player
and not by the game, which means you *can* just pfaff around with skill
tester claw games and bowling for days of real time and never miss the
critical plot twist coming around the corner. I really want Shenmue to
get remade in this format.

It's worth mentioning that Kiwami saw fit to recast Sayama, the lady cop
that Kiryu has the ill-fated romance with. The previous actor was sort
of an old-soul-in-a-young-body performance, and this newer one takes the
act in a different direction that suits the extra content. I may be the
only person in the world who cares about that aspect of the game though.

-KKC, who has too much to do today.

It's lucky for us that nobody would ever post fiction on Usenet.

In my case I think it's probably due to getting the side-mission
detector item relatively early on (another similarity with Yakuza 5
IIRC). I suppose it's harder to ignore the missions if they're shown
on the map as they gradually unlock.
