Two recent items appearing in the cyclist media show, when juxtaposed, the
cant, humbug and hypocrisy so prevalent in the myopic, self-entitled world
of cycling.

There has been much discussion of the recent suggestion that cyclists and
their bicycles be brought into the same legal and criminal framework as
that enjoyed by the motor vehicle section of society, by having cycle
registration and compulsory insurance, and being subjected to speed limits.

“Impossible!” shout the cyclists. But something so simple as this is not
impossible or even difficult.“Expensive, bureaucratic!” they whinge,
largely because of the notoriously tight-fisted attitude of the cycling
world. “Just like North Korea!” they claim, desperate to denigrate this
measure using any stick they can find in their desperation to beat this
proposal into insensibility.

Compare this attitude to that of the recent killing of a convicted drug
dealer by two people involved in the local drugs war, according to evidence
given in court. They used a car to run down and kill their rival, it
probably being uninsured, untaxed, and probably not MoT’d, yet the killers
were quickly found, arrested, tried and found guilty. At the time of
writing they are awaiting sentence. The key point is that the vehicle had
been registered, albeit in the name of someone else unconnected with this
case, and yet was quickly traced.

The link with the cycling world?

The convicted drug dealer who was killed was riding a bicycle at the time.

It is to the cycling world’s undying shame that they have stooped so low by
choosing this case to highlight their crusade.
