Does anybody (of an operatic bent, obviously) see any slight similarity
between the current plot (what Ed did in the woods) and the last act of
Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro?

Not quite there yet... Rex is as prudish a voyeur as Basilio, but
Ed'n'Em knew each other perfectly well. However, I can see Harrison
renouncing all women as fickle, and Fallon pardoning him graciously on
Christmas eve. It's all a bit tedious without the music to give it
heart, though, isn't it?

It's to do with articles of clothing (though it's not _quite_ the same).
Why does the count think his wife is being unfaithful?

I don't think he does before Act IV, does he? Apart from a flirtation
with Cherubino that he thinks he's solved by sending the boy off. It's
all about desire for Susanna. Figaro is suspicious because Barbarina let
the cat out of the bag and no-one heard the pin drop. Both men are
fooled by the clever clothes-swapping women.

As always seems to be the case in old dramas. I'm sure Shakespeare didn't
invent the notion.

Is it 'Projection'? He's inclined to lust after any attractive woman,
so he fears that his wife has a similar besetting sin.

Aristophanes' "The Assemblywomen" has the women disguising themselves as men.

Much like the stoning scene in "Life of Brian" then.

Specifically: he thinks his wife is being unfaithful with Figaro because he
sees Figaro making love to a woman wearing his wife's clothes. Ditto Figaro
suspecting Susanna at first.

The only difference is that Fallon and Emma both own the same coat, while
Susanna and the Countess have very different clothes. When we put on Figaro
in the 90s (to my translation which had taken two years) our director was
very confused and at first told the costume lady* that we would need two
identical cloaks. Nope.

*Known to many of us as the lady with the cat on her head because she
always wore this furry hat, indoors and out. She did a super job with all
the societies in the Chester area, and once said "I always tell my men to
wear a pair of firm swimming trunks under their tights, because in the
course of a show you go through a full range of emotions".

I've heard it called many things...

TNMF used to do what we called the Jehovah Dance when he was wearing what
looked like a loincloth (where the convict kicks up the dirt and chants
Jehovah, Jehovah. Used to make me laugh every time.
