One screw has fully pulled out. The other, as shown, has partial pulled
out and bent.

The door is jammed in a skewed position and the door opener gives up
almost immediately. If I release the door opener, I can't move the door
either. The spring is still under tension.

I have already considered the option of letting someone else deal with
it, and it may come to that.

Thoughts?

Sylvia.

**Yikes. You need to disconnect the door opener (somehow), open the door
and release the spring (carefully). Then re-mount BOTH brackets using
good quality galvanised fixings. If you can't, pay someone to do the
job. My roller door is on it's last legs and, given the very
considerable mass of the thing (it's steel), I will have no choice but
to pay someone to do the job.

Disconnecting the door opener is simple, repairing this is no problem -
I'll drill right through the wooden pillar, and use bolts.

It's releasing the spring tension safely that is taxing my imagination,
given that I cannot move the door at all.

Sylvia.

I have a couple of ideas using steel rod/pipe or similar down the guts
of the spring but I'm not going to say anything specific as I think for
safety sake it's really best left to someone else. I would feel pretty
bad if you got hurt using a method I suggested.

If you have to ask, then get someone who knows what they're doing to fix
it for you.

Didn't you ask this exact same question 7 years ago?

Considering the danger of the spring it may be best to let a door
specialist fix it.
Very likely they will release the tension from the springs before they
repair the bracket, no doubt they will know how to do that safely.
Is the pillar that the bracket is attached to wood/concrete/brick?
Not easy to see in the pic.

**I've used these things for all manner of clamping:

https://www.irwin.com/tools/clamps/quick-grip-heavy-duty-one-handed-bar-clamps

Capable of quite respectable pressure. You might be able to restore the
bracket back into it's location using one clamp. Open the door halfway,
then re-clamp with a second one, thus allowing the door to fully open.
Then you might be able to release the spring and re-attach the bracket.

It's wood.

I've decided that whatever I do, it will not involve the side with the
failed bracket while the spring is under tension, and I've placed wheely
(sp?) bins partly filled with water around it to catch anything that
might fly off.

I was fortunate that this occurred while I was trying to put the car
back into the garage, or it would have been trapped inside.

Sylvia.

Difficult to say without being there and looking at it but it may be
possible to secure the door with blocks of wood then just lever the
spring off the lower bracket.
Wrap a heavy towel around the spring to stop it flying around when the
tension comes off.
You might also need to somehow "lock" the other side from moving before
you release the broken side or it might suddenly spring open twisting
the door.
If you could release the spring and get the bracket back in place you
should be able to drill out the broken bolts then drill though the
bracket and secure it onto the timber with large timber screws or if the
wood is too soft you could drill all the way through and secure with a
coach bolt and nut.

In the end, I surrounded the failed side with wheelie bins part filled
with water to catch anything that might fly out of that area in the
event of a sudden failure.

I then constructed a much over-engineered jig that let me release the
tension in the spring on the other side.

I was then able to remove bracket from that side, so that the door was
no longer being forced to try to pivot about two different axes. This in
turn gave me enough play to move the door from the outside where I was
shielded from anything the spring might to, to the point where the bent
screw on the failed side snapped, and released the tension in that spring.

Part of the time taken for this was because I had to visit two Bunnings
and a Mitre Ten to get the things I needed. Who'd have thought that
getting an M10 eye bolt would be so difficult? Apparently there are
supply chain issues affecting even such mundane parts.

All I have to do now is drill some holes and put it all back together -
a task for tomorrow, I think.

Sylvia.

Yeah, I don't get it. The problem as I see it is that it snapped off one
of the fasteners in the timber stud which caused it to root the second
one. They both need to be removed if she's going to reposition the
bracket back where it was originally, otherwise the stud needs to be
replaced.

Fucked if I know what the eye-bolt is for.

The eye bolt was part of the jig.

The bracket is not broken. It just pulled its mounting screws out.

I'll rephrase then, how do you intend to reattach the bracket?

cut the bracket off  the unbroken bolt and unscrew it. drill a hole in
the other one and use a screw extractor to unscrew it.

The upper screw didn't break, it completely pulled out, and is pretty
much undamaged. My plan is to drill through to the other side of the
wood, and use a bolt.

The screw that broke later left a considerable amount exposed, and it
was easy to remove.

The spring pulls the bracket downwards, so the upper screw is in
tension, and the lower screw is not. So I'll probably just replace the
lower screw with a longer one to bite into fresh wood.

It is not at all clear to me why this failed. The upper screw gets
unloaded and loaded again each time the door opens, but if anything, I
would expect that to break the screw, not the wood holding it in place.

Sylvia.

Actually, cyclical vertical loading on a coach screw into wood is
definitely not ideal. That bracket should have only placed shear loading
onto that coach screw. That is what they are designed for In that
installation, that bracket should have had coach bolts or similar from
the beginning. The threads on a bolt a perfect for that kind of cyclical
loading. Your idea to replace the screw with a bolt is definitely the go
here.
