diameter then a there's a secure fix.

I'm sure there is a code and I always drill pilot holes into hardwood. I
think you overdid it with the screws but whatever, it's unlikely to
cause any issues.

obviously it was not done that way for two reasons, cost and appearance.
no one would want a steel plate with two bolt heads on the outside of
the garage posts of their house. also, notice that that post is very
thick. it would not be practical to do it that way anyway. maybe coach
bolts was the best way to go, but longer ones? also, everything wears
out in time. the home owner should have noticed deterioration of the
assembly and taken remedial action before it got to this stage.

I would have used slightly recessed coach bolts. Drill a recess with a
spade bit that is the head thickness and it even looks OK. A bit deeper
and you can fill over the bolt head. It's no biggie.

I don't like that style of garage door at all. Our neighbour in
Melbourne had one and she was always having issues with it. I prefer
what I have here, a panel lift.

The spring on our door broke last year. I just called the *experts*,
they came and put a temporary joiner on the spring, ordered two new
springs and came back at a later date and installed them. I replaced two
springs because they have both done the same amount of work so I could
expect the other to break at any time if I just replaced one, Murphy's
Law and all that. FWIW, the crew of two had all the tools and expertise
and the cost was, in my estimation, bugger all. Well worth calling them in.

Nothing astonishes Noddy so much as common sense and plain dealing.
