Wasn't there a thread a while back about the bells of Ambridge St. Stephen's? Or was it those of the cathedral?

Anyway, unless I blinked and missed it, the New Year was not rung in in Ambridge this year, nor any lack of ringers mentioned.

You'll have to remind me: did the bellringing stop because of Covid-19
restrictions and just never start up again? Or did the scriptwriters
just lose interest once Bert Fry was no longer active?

I think we've heard from or of them in the last couple of years, if only in
conversation between Neil and Shula.

I was reminded of the New Year bell-ringing in Furneux Pelham. It was
delivered by one small, drunken, man, known as Bill (I think - my memory
for names is awful and getting worse) who had been drinking and singing in
the pub all evening - as he often did. He had to climb up inside the tower
and link one rope to a foot, and two others to his hands and, surprisingly,
produced a tuneful noise. How he got out and rolled home (a few yards)
without damaging himself, I've no idea.

Was Bert a bell ringer? I thought it was Neil and Shula in recent years
and I can imagine the first of these is getting on a bit - he is 65 you
know - and the latter would have to be at the end of a very long piece
of rope.

I think you are right. He was a churchwarden, I think, but now you
mention it, I don't think he rang any bells.
