I was just listening to Jim Al-Khalili's Life Scientific podcast and his
interviewee mentioned Antrim Rovers football club. It caused me to
wonder (for the first time, I'm sure) why so many football clubs are
named Rovers. Seeing as Umra knows everything, somerat must know.

Perhaps for the same reason as in the song Coca Cabanna (sp?) ‘He called
her Rover’. ;-)))

Premier League. Today we have naming of clubs.
Yesterday was forging of passports and tomorrow
Tomorrow we will see but today we have naming of clubs.

Behind the sheds alongside the ruined allotments
Harry Kane, aged eight-and-a-half kicks the Sports Direct ball
Between the stunted beech and the fly-tipped fridge
But today we have naming of clubs.

This is Leicester City, over there is Manchester City and of course
Norwich City which we have not got since the relegation.
The influence of the Cities will become clear when we watch them.

Lionel Messi, recently arrived from Albania, speaks no English but
Knows how to kick a ball.
He and Harry are already friends.

Watford, West Ham, Wolves. The importance of these we will see later.
Leah Williamson deftly takes the ball off Kane, weaves past Messi
between the wide-screen TV and the broken glass across the mud then
Back of the wardrobe! What a result! Crystal Palace! Chelsea!

Burnley, which we have not got.
Everton. Brighton.
Leeds shines bright as a star in the north.

Archie! Come and get your tea! Harry Kane shuffles home.
Leah and Messi, who won't have any tea tonight, monotonously pass
The ball between them until the last of the light fades away.
Nobody knows where they live but today we had naming of clubs.

Nick

On a more serious note I believe it was because when the clubs were
founded in the early days of foopball they did not have a permanent
place to play and would rove to whatever field was available for a
particular match. Similarly Rangers ranged. Uniteds were formed by the
amalgamation of two or more clubs, Sheffield Wednesday played midweek usw.

Because originally they roved around to play rather than having a home
of their own. Same with Wanderers.

Thanks all, for the kind words. I appreciate them. Especially as I'm
suffering from a sort-of impostor syndrome. I spent a few minutes
looking up who was in and who was out of the Premier League then a few
minutes more scribbling in a notebook and there it was, done.

Thanks again,

Nick

Why indeed.

The RSPB says of the bird:

"a superb flyer"

It also describes them as:

"Sleeping, eating, bathing and even mating on the wing"

I don't know which of these attributes seemed attractive to the nascent
