Vinnies after I used it.

Turns out that I had an old version of Affinity (Photo) on my PC. Can't
recall installing or using it but, meh. Anyhoo, it told me to Update to the
latest version which I did and, strangely, it appears to be free. Go
figure. So I had a 10 minute play and have to opine that it's nowhere near
Ps. *At least* one generation behind. It has no AI modules, doesn't have
any colourisation process for B&W pix and is way behind Ps in plugins and
support. It's traditionally and pleasingly laid out and would be fine for
most at present if it was free, but a Ps rival it isn't

Speaking of "photo editing" generations... Thanks to Chinas' wildly
enthusiastic adoption of a Big Brother State, the next generation of image
reconstruction software, especially facial, is going to be spectacularly
good. There's already programs available that can turn a badly blurred face
into something very sharp, but they struggle with landscapes (and faces on
> 45 degree angles). Gen Next will do the lot. So don't throw away those
blurry photos just yet.

On the other hand it does allow the use of Photoshop plugins as well as
others such as Topaz denoise which is just about indispensable with
modern high res digital cameras. Topaz Sharpen AI is also reasonably
good but they still have a way to go.

I use it occasionally if I have something I can't do in my go image
processing program such as create a logo.

I'm using Capture One 22 as my go to image processing program and it
provides spectacular results.

A recent shot processed in Capture One and finished in Topaz Sharpen Ai.

I tried Topaz Sharpen Ai recently, but for my current main requirement of
identifying/cleaning up people it was beaten pants down by a couple of
alternatives, most notably HitPaw.

To me, who has scanned/repaired quite a few old family albums over the
decades, this is amazing. It's not flawless (yet), but the minor faults,
like the hair tinge in this one, can be easily fixed in Ps.

Note: The background is still shite because I chose the 'Face' option in
HitPaw.

I'll give Capture One a go in the near future.

Bear in mind that Capture One is used for image processing of raw images
from the camera. It is not as fully featured as Photoshop and only
allows cropping and removal of blemishes such as hotspots on the image.
I used it because of the ease of workflow and speed when processing
images that are ~60mb raw files. It does have it's own suite of add ons
to give you various effects.

I've looked for genuine reviews of hitpaw but can't seem to find any on
the photographic sites. They have a ton of their own.

Yeah, that's one of the oddities about it. No-one seems to know about it. I
found it by chance in a lengthy Reddit thread.

Another oddity is that the facial reconstruction is so very, very good, but
the other two options (General/Landscape & Denoise) are a total waste of
time.

Something else I've found simple, useful (and good fun) is Luminar Neo. Has
some new AI modules that do very nifty tricks. It can also be used as a Ps
plugin... *and* is actually located in downtown Kyiv. From where they even
released an update a week or so back. That's dedication.
