Even better, locate a Dual 1214/1216/1218, cut a new mounting plate and
you'll be able to run a magnetic cartridge (with an outboard phono
preamp), which won't damage LPs. That way, you get the styling, but with
a cartridge that tracks at 1.5g instead one that tracks at 1.5oz.

I will do Trev, thanks. Might be a couple of weeks as I have a bit on at
the moment, but I'll get to it.

hassle of selling it is a matter for you to decide.

Funny thing, I had a very similar model Technics DD turntable, probably
the predecessor to that one. Looking up on the vintage technics audio
site, it would have to be the SL-23 as it is the only one that matches
my purchase date - early 77. The SL-20 doesn't have the stroboscopic
speed correction so it wasn't that one - the only other 76-77 vintage
beast. It was part of a complete Technics Hifi system that cost me
$2,000 plus back in the day. I had it at Mt Newman and when I left I had
to sell it as I was travelling in a VW beach buggy back to Melbourne and
there isn't a lot of luggage room in those, all my vinyl too. By the
time I loaded up my two footlockers and tools there was no room for the
Technics system even though the buggy was an unshortened chassis and
still had rear seats. That and the fact the buggy had no roof, my mate's
unfinished project. He'd moved back to Victoria and shacked up with a
Filipina lady, wanted me to either sell it or bring it over. No one
wanted it, I couldn't get transport to cart *my* gear across, looked at
the buggy, figured it would fill the bill. That trip, Newman-Moe, was a
nightmare, I could write a book on that story alone. 10:30PM Wednesday
evening departed Newman, arrived Moe Sunday early afternoon and, typical
for Victoria, it was raining and I had no roof, I had no alternator, no
clutch and the engine was barely running, just on two cylinders. VW
reliability? Hahahah. The only advantage of it was that it was based on
a Type 34 Karmann Ghia with a large engine, 1500 or 1600, can't recall,
and the buggy would exceed the car's normal top speed because there was
bugger all weight and the buggy body was very streamlined.

See how I segued cars into an off topic thread?

I would love to still have that old Technics system. I'll wager the chap
I sold it to would still have it. He never threw anything away.

Yep, best to put it on a trolley and wheel it out on the verge at
council pickup day than waste another cent on it. Better to put the
money toward something decent.

I think he thought he bought something and it turned out to be shit. Ah
well, better to ask for advice before buying next time, not that he
would take your advice anyway ;-)

Short answer yes. I'd suggest putting it on ebay or if you're on
facebook one of the vintage Hi-Fi groups. Those kind of things sell
quickly at the right price and it's always better to give stuff another
life rather than dump it.

**Definitely. Even a relatively low end, old school, Japanese made
turntable, is far superior to anything JB HI Fi sells for less than
$400.00 today. I get a constant stream of people bringing modern junk,
recently purchased from JB, which simply tell the customer to chuck them
and buy almost anything that is 40 years old.

Your Technics is not a stunning performer (it is certainly adequate
though), but it does have an excellent tone arm, which you would not
find on a modern turntable costing $400.00.

So yeah, clean your Technics up and advertise it. Even if you price it
very low, at least it will go to someone who will appreciate it, rather
than landfill.

speaking of which I scored quite a good computer not so long ago. the
owner hadn't even bothered to erase the hard drive, which had business
records on it. so I sent (fake) invoices to all his customers and made
quite a bit of money. ok.. just kidding about that last bit.  :)

yes, If I have something or things I no longer want or can use I like to
sell or give them to someone who wants or can use them. even just give
it to an op shop is better than chucking it in the rubbish. there's
always someone worse off who will love to have things you don't want.
