Be interesting to see the research shows if there’s a similar effect when
The Wind Is In From Africa and AQ drops to 4 or 5, even in the wilds of
Shropshire.

Wonder what The Guardian would have to say about that…

A coroner has made legal history by ruling that air pollution was a cause of the death of a nine-year-old girl.

Philip Barlow, the inner south London coroner, said Ella Kissi-Debrah’s death in February 2013 was caused by acute respiratory failure, severe asthma and air pollution exposure.

He said she was exposed to nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter (PM) pollution in excess of World Health Organization guidelines, the principal source of which were traffic emissions.

The coroner said the failure to reduce pollution levels to legal limits possibly contributed to her death, as did the failure to provide her mother with information about the potential for air pollution to exacerbate asthma.

“Ella died of asthma contributed to by exposure to excessive air pollution,” said the coroner on Wednesday.

He said that during Ella’s life, nitrogen dioxide emissions in Lewisham, where she lived, exceeded legal limits, both EU and national levels. Particulate matter levels were above the WHO guidelines, he said.

Trying to make motor vehicles work reminds me of the woman in a Steinbeck novel who was running a vacuum over floor when the house had no electricity.

It's just as ridiculous.

The worldwide love affair with the car, which promised consumers convenience, status and freedom, is over. The reality from Hotan to Hull and Lagos to Lahore is that the car is now a social and environmental curse, disconnecting people, eroding public space, fracturing local economies, and generating sprawl and urban decay. With UK temperatures hitting highs of 40C this summer, this reality has become impossible to ignore. Instead of the prospect of speed and cheap mobility, consumers now get soaring costs, climate breakdown and air pollution, the devastation of nature, mounting debt, personal danger and ill health, and the most serious energy crisis in 30 years.

Now the World Health Organization is worried. Car accidents are the eighth highest cause of death for people of all ages, and the leading cause among young people aged 5-29 worldwide. At least 1.3 million people die in car accidents every year, with a further 20 to 50 million people sustaining injuries, often at phenomenal personal and financial cost.

Here in Great Britain, 24,530 people were killed or seriously injured on roads in 2020/21. The cost of all accidents, including an estimate of those not reported to the police, was around £28.4bn in 2020, or around 16% of the current NHS budget. In the US it is even worse: government figures show that traffic accidents and their knock-on impacts cost nearly $1tn (£800bn) a year, and that more than 624,000 people died in fatal crashes between 2000 and 2017. That compares with the 535,000 American military personnel estimated to have died in both world wars. In China, 250,000 people a year die in accidents.

For more than a decade, motorists were encouraged to buy diesel cars. You may have been one of them, along with your friends, family and colleagues.

These cars had cheaper taxes, and for years, the fact that they produce less carbon dioxide made them seem environmentally friendly. Win-win, or so we all thought…

We now know that diesel cars give off high levels of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter (small particles suspended in the air including dust, dirt, soot and smoke) that can lead to lung disease. Each year, 29,000 deaths in the UK are caused from particulate matter alone.

The number of diesel cars on our roads has risen from 7.4% to 36.2% between 1994 and 2014. There are now nearly 11 million diesel cars in the UK. That’s over half of new car purchases.
Tricked by diesel

At the end of 2015, we asked nearly 1,000 people to fill out a survey. Half of all the diesel drivers who took part said they felt ‘tricked’ into choosing diesel as the ‘healthier option.’

More than 80% of diesel car drivers asked are now worried about the impact on their health.

And if the health effects of diesel aren’t enough, we’re now realising that we could be completely misinformed about the emissions these cars make. The Volkswagen affair at the end of last year revealed how inaccurate emissions readings can be.

Independent reports have shown that when researchers measured a car’s emissions in a lab, the results were much lower than they would have been if it was being driven in real world conditions.

For some cars, the everyday emissions were a whopping ten times higher than the results in the lab!

In spite of this, if you go and buy a car today you will still only be told about the carbon dioxide it emits. There is unlikely to be any information about the other dangerous pollutants you could be exposed to.
What is the government doing about it?

The government is investigating how widespread the misreporting of emissions has been. It says it is committed to bringing in real-world drive testing in the UK.

But things are happening far too slowly. Last week, the EU parliament passed a vote which means new diesel cars will still be allowed to produce double the safe level of emissions until 2020.

This is simply not good enough.

The risk from diesel emissions is real. It is happening every day, down every street, trapped in every car, through the air we all breathe. The government needs to make people more aware of what diesel cars can do to their lungs.

These changes need to happen urgently.
We need to take action

So what can you do? Join our air pollution campaign.

Join the campaign

We’re calling on the government to bring in real-world, independent testing for all diesel cars in the UK as soon as possible.

We also think the government needs to work on helping the public understand the risks of air pollution. And owners of diesel cars need to know how to protect their lungs.

Sign up to our action plan today and we will let you know how you can help us fight to clean up the air we breathe.

Couldn't the DoT just fine* all Labour ex-ministers (especially Gordon
Broon who committed the alleged deceit)?

Why blame the victims?

[* The fine would have to be very substantial, of course. Probably the
entirety of the assets of the individuals concerned, plus the assets of
the Party.]

Pollution from diesel vehicles is stunting the growth of children’s lungs, leaving them damaged for life, a major study has found.

The research, conducted with more than 2,000 school children in London, is the first such study in a city where diesel pollution is a significant factor, and has implications for cities around the world. It also showed that charges to deter polluting trucks from entering the city did reduce air pollution a little but did not reduce the harm to children’s lungs.

The World Health Organization classifies air pollution, which causes 7 million early deaths every year, a global public health emergency. Ninety per cent of children around the world breathe unsafe air. Growing children are especially vulnerable to toxic air and previous research has linked it to low birth weights, cot deaths, obesity and mental health problems.

Most urban areas in the UK have illegal levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution, and the government has suffered three legal defeats over the inadequacy of its plans. The latest government action plan, which environmental lawyers called “pitiful”, revealed air pollution was even worse than previously feared.

“We are raising a generation of children with stunted lung capacity,” said Prof Chris Griffiths, at Queen Mary University of London, who led the research team. “This reflects a car industry that has deceived the consumer and central government, which continues to fail to act decisively to ensure towns and cities cut traffic. The public very much wants better air quality, and they are right.”

The study, published in the Lancet Public Health, found the capacity of children’s lungs was reduced by about 5% when NO2 pollution was above legal levels. Lung capacity peaks at age 18, then declines, Griffiths said. “If your lungs are already smaller than they should be as you enter adulthood, then as they decline with age you’ll be at higher risk of an early death,” as well as at a higher risk of lung diseases, he said.

The researchers said doctors should consider advising parents of children with lung problems to avoid living in high-pollution areas if possible, or to limit their exposure.

“This new study reveals the terrible legacy of successive governments’ failure to act over illegal levels of air pollution,” said Andrea Lee, at environmental lawyers ClientEarth. A new, stricter ultra low emission zone (ULEZ), which will extend the low emission zone (LEZ) charge that applies to polluting trucks to cars, will begin London in April 2019, but Lee said: “Action is also needed at a national level.”

“We need ministers to implement emergency measures to tackle pollution around schools and nurseries and fund the move to cleaner forms of transport, not wash their hands of the problem and leave it for local government to sort out,” she said.

Samantha Walker, at Asthma UK, said: “It is disappointing that theLEZ in London has not helped to improve children’s lung capacity and shows that a piecemeal approach to reducing air pollution does not work.”

The new research tested the lung capacity of eight- to nine-year-old children from 28 primary schools across east London between 2009 and 2014. It began just after LEZ charges began and continued after the rules were tightened in 2012. Air pollution was reduced by an average of 1-2μg/m3 at the roadside, but at the end of the study the annual average was still about 70μg/m3, far above the 40μg/m3 legal limit.

Referring to the stunting of lung growth and asthma symptoms, Griffiths said: “It is disappointing that we didn’t see an impact.” But he said it was critical public health policies were evaluated to test their effectiveness, and that the work has informed the design of the stricter ULEZ.

The results of the study would apply to many cities, Griffiths said: “Air quality in London is bad, but it is similarly bad in other UK cities and cities across Europe, and of course in India and China it is notoriously bad.”
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus speaks at a press conference in 2017.

The Guardian revealed in 2017 that hundreds of thousands of children were being exposed to illegal levels of air pollution from diesel vehicles at schools and nurseries across England and Wales, with the poorest neighbourhoods most severely affected.

The new research has “many notable strengths”, including detailed air pollution measurements and high quality data on the children’s respiratory health, according to a commentary in the Lancet Public Health by Hanna Boogaard and Annemoon van Erp, at the Health Effects Institute in Boston, US.

But they noted it was not possible to include control groups in the study and that the NO2 reductions were quite small, making it harder to link air pollution to stunted lungs. Nonetheless, a statistically significant link was shown. Evidence from California suggests it is a causal link, because children’s lung damage there reduced as air quality improved between 1994 and 2011.

Road transport is one of the biggest sources of pollution in the UK, contributing to poor air quality, noise disturbance, congestion and climate change . Of the 34 million vehicles on our roads, 28 million are cars. Whilst travel by car is often the only practicable option, there are simple steps we can all take to reduce the number of journeys we take and their impact on the environment.
Climate Change

Road transport accounts for 22% of total UK emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) a major contributor to climate change. The EU has agreements with motor manufacturers that aim to reduce average CO2 emissions from new cars. Colour-coded labels, similar to those used on washing machines and fridges, are now displayed in car showrooms showing how much CO2 new models emit per kilometre. However, as traffic levels are predicted to increase, road transport will continue to be a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions..
Air Quality

Air pollutants from transport include nitrogen oxides, particles, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. All have a damaging impact on the health of people, animals and vegetation locally. Air quality in the UK is slowly improving, but many areas still fail to meet the health based national air quality objectives and European limit values – particularly for particles and nitrogen dioxide. In town centres and alongside busy roads, vehicles are responsible for most local pollution. Vehicles tend to emit more pollution during the first few miles of journey when their engines are warming up. Although new technology and cleaner fuel formulations will continue to cut emissions of pollutants, the increasing number of vehicles on the road and miles driven is eroding these benefits.
Noise

Noise from road traffic affects 30% of people in the UK. Sources include engine noise, tyre noise, car horns, car stereos, door slamming, and squeaking brakes. Vehicles have been subject to noise standards for many years through EU legislation. The sound of engines is a problem in towns and cities, while in more rural areas tyre noise on busy roads, which increases with speed, is the main source. Low-noise road surfaces, effective noise barriers in sensitive locations, and low noise tyres can all help reduce noise levels. Meanwhile, encouraging people to close car windows when playing loud music, and discouraging the use of ‘boom box’ car stereos would significantly reduce noise impact.
Resource Use

Vehicles have a major impact on the environment through their construction, use and eventual disposal. It is estimated that of the CO2 emissions produced over a car’s lifespan 10% come from its manufacture and 5% from its disposal, with the remaining 85% coming from fuel use and servicing operations. In addition to these emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants, the vehicle and related industries (e.g. fuels) consume large amounts of raw materials, and produce significant quantities of waste.
Local Impacts

Vehicle use affects our whole quality of local life. Traffic can be dangerous and intimidating, dividing communities and making street life unpleasant.. Abandoned vehicles cause nuisance, whilst air pollution and traffic noise can make urban living uncomfortable.

No it isn’t.

In order to fit CO2 with the carefully-adjusted temperature data, a
‘positive feedback’ hypothesis had to be advanced.

This hypothesis has never been substantiated.

‘Positive feedbacks’ act until the system under consideration fails in some
way, in this case leading to a wildly unstable climate.

We have a variable climate, not an unstable one.

The feedback hypothesis therefore appears to be wrong.

Several times a year The Wind Is In From Africa, bringing with it massive
pollution that tends to affect the south of the UK. The haze hanging on
hilltops and filling valleys has to be seen to be believed. It shows up
less in cities because of the foreshortened horizon. Doubtless it kills
people there.

Africa isn’t noted for high traffic density.

What is the EU doing about that?

Nothing.

The term ‘noise’ is undefined, making the following comments irrelevant.

So does everything, including the food you eat.

So does everything.

Yes, it means people can leave the shithole cities and live somewhere
nicer, because they can get about using a car.

Whoever actually wants to commute on London’s underground? Or by London
bus? Or even live in London at all?

London's air quality - how bad is it?

We've already made a lot of progress on London's air quality problem, but there's still more work to do. The volume of road traffic in London makes it one of the most polluted places in the UK.

And air pollution is not just a central London problem - 100% of Londoners live in an area where pollution exceeds the latest recommendations from the World Health Organization for particulate matter PM2.5. This is one of the air pollutants thought to have the greatest impact on human health.
How road transport harms our health

Road vehicles are the single biggest cause of London's air pollution. They produce nearly half of all nitrogen oxides and emit tiny particles of rubber and metal - too small to see with the naked eye - into the air we breathe..

Despite recent improvements in air quality, toxic air pollution in the Capital is still the biggest environmental risk to the health of all Londoners, harming our lungs, worsening chronic illnesses such as asthma, lung and heart disease and putting the health of our children at risk. A study from Imperial College London says that in 2019 over 4,000 Londoners died because of the impact of toxic air.

Air quality myth #2

Myth: Road vehicles aren't the main cause of London's air pollution

FACT: Driving polluting vehicles is the single biggest cause, contributing to nearly half of the air pollution in London

I remember the thick smoke from coal fires when every house had one and the
smoke from old cars and lorries, long before emission controls, catalytic
converters, and cars burnt nearly as much oil as petrol. Perhaps one child
in a class of 40 ( which was the norm in primary schools) suffered from
asthma, food allergies were as rare as a premium bond win, ……

Now everything is someone else’s fault - especially if you can sue them,
use it as excuse to avoid work, explain poor behaviour, ……

Car emissions are lower than ever. Those who claim otherwise should visit
an MOT test station and ask to see a test on modern car. Even my old Mx5,
bought in 1999, the last MOT it had before I sold it almost exactly 5 years
ago had a string of 0’s for emissions. Some cars are so good they don’t
even check them - it isn’t required, including my 4x4 which, in terms of
CO2, is deemed better that our Aygo or old Smart Car was.
(Obviously CO2 is not a zero - they refer to the ones deemed ‘nasty’.

As for Asthma, studies have shown it is due to exposure to even minute
parts mites and their dung found in house dust, bedding etc. Washing
bedding in higher temperatures, use of hepa filters etc can prevent it.
Every home has them, like bacteria etc they are part of life, you just need
to control them. Modern homes are warmer and with modern washing machines/
powders etc working at lower temperatures the mites aren’t killed off
unless you actively take precautions.

Quite true.

The thinking is now that asthma is caused by insufficient challenges to the
developing immune system, partly by not letting toddlers play in the
garden, etc, and having an antiseptic home.

The next phase of the attacks on personal mobility, after lead, CO, CO2,
and exhaust particulates, will be ‘pollution’ from the tyres, even from
EVs. The exported pollution that will kill other people due to their
manufacturing requirements and energy demands will be ignored.

Pollutants from cars can cause a range of health problems, from allergies and skin irritation to heart disease and respiratory problems such as asthma.. Long-term repeated exposure to diesel exhaust fumes may also increase the risk of lung cancer, according to the World Health Organisation.

A blockage in your exhaust can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Breathing in CO can cause headaches, respiratory problems and even death if inhaled in large quantities. It’s particularly dangerous to children and people suffering from heart disease.

The amount of exhaust fumes people are exposed to varies greatly, but those living in densely-populated urban areas are most at risk of developing health problems linked to pollution.

Every time you go for a drive, pollution is emitted directly into the air which causes significant risks for your health, especially for people who live near busy roads, and for the environment. You see it every time that smoke billows from your car's exhaust pipe, and from all the different forms of transportation we rely on to get around and to move goods around the planet — vehicles are a major contributor to air pollution.

Air pollution refers to the presence of foreign substances in the air that don't belong there, or excessive amounts of certain impurities that wouldn't harm us otherwise. When cars burn gasoline, they emit pollutants. Gasoline fumes escape into the air even when we pump gasoline into our fuel tanks.

There are three major pollutants that come from cars:

Particulate matter — a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air that contribute to atmospheric haze and can damage your lungs and get into your bloodstream.

Carbon monoxide (CO) — cars emit carbon monoxide when fuel is burned. Breathing air with a high concentration of CO affects critical organs like your heart and brain. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, as much as 95 percent of all CO emissions in cities may come from motor vehicle exhaust.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) — when fuel burns, nitrogen and oxygen react with each other and form nitrogen oxides (NOx). Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) forms from emissions from cars, trucks, buses, power plants and off-road equipment. Breathing air with a high concentration of NO2 can affect the respiratory system.

When hydrocarbons and NOx combine in sunlight, they produce ozone. High in the atmosphere, a layer of ozone protects us from the sun's ultraviolet rays. When holes in the atmosphere's ozone layer allow ozone to come closer to Earth, it contributes to smog and causes respiratory problems.

Air pollutants emitted from cars are believed to cause cancer and contribute to such problems as asthma, heart disease, birth defects and eye irritation.
