Since he's the first 45-year old to take a 5-er in English FC cricket since 1952, it's safe to say that such feats will hereafter be rarer still, and has been made possible by the present generation of cricketers on whom the demands of fitness are exacting. Ken Higgs was 49, when he played for Leics in an emergency against Yorkshire taking 5 for 22 in 1986.

I also suspect Ray Illingworth did so for either Leics or Yorkshire after the age of 44.

Fred Titmus and Wilf Wooler may also have done so. RH

Even spinners rarely play till they are 45 these days. I'd thought that
Illingworth might have taken a 5-fer when he returned to captain
Yorkshire for a season aged 50 (IIRC), but apparently not. Gareth Batty
is now 43, but mostly only plays in T20 these days.

It looks like 1952 was actually the last time a bowler over 50 did it in England (Tom Goddard 3 times at the age of 51). The last over-50 to do it anywhere was Lala Amarnath in 1962/63.

Two seasons

He was close when he took 4-48 (including Viv Richards) v Somerset in 1983. It looks like Ian Swallow may have taken the last wicket.

Wooller was 46 when he last did it in 1959. Titmus was 43 when he took his last 5-fer.

Jack Simmons retried in 1989 at the age of 48. I suspect he must have had his laast 5fer in 1988.

Simmons had a very odd career. He did not gain a regular Lancashire place until he was 28 after which he went on to a 20 year long FC career. including capatraining Tasmania to Sheffield Shield status.
