I read every book by EM Foner, but only because they're available on
Kindle Unlimited*, and the author has recently released one of his
better books in an audio form on youtube.

*IMHO there aren't enough books on Kindle Unlimited that are good enough
to warrant a subscription so I just wait until there is a free trial for
a month and then pig-out. The authors get paid by the page** so I always
open all the books I like and go to the last page; a sort of apology to
the author for not buying the book.

**Which is why some books have summaries of multiple other books by the
same author at the front and an excerpt from the next book at the end. I
find the latter particularly irritating because it means I'm reading the
book and watching the page numbers and it ends unexpectedly.

When I bought a Paperwhite (A Kindle device M'Lud) I received 3 month's
free trial - and then a further month for a couple of quid (IIRC).

Like you, I didn't think a paid subscription was worth while.
