Are you feeling all right? Surely *everything* is because
of Brexit? Anyway, you've not moaned about losing the
referendum for at least 5 minutes, so here's your chance,
LOSER! :-)

I was interested to know for discussion purposes but I accept there
may be an inconsistency.

From what I read, all should be revealed soon.

Yet again you prove that once a Brexshitter, always a Brexshitter, no
matter what any evidence actually says.

That seems astonishingly cheap. Although I am sure Apple applies a large
markup, it's surely not that much.

Perhaps the cost of assembly (excluding parts) is what costs 30 to 50 USD?

And said to be astonishingly true.

Some while ago I read a magazine article on this very subject. The
author hung around outside some phone shops for a while and interviewed
new iPhone owners as they left the shops.

He was looking for people who had just taken out a new (probably 2 year)
contract and asked each of them how long they thought it would be before
their payments covered the cost of the handset. Obviously there were
massive variations in the replies, but nobody got the correct answer
since (he claimed) in most cases the handset cost was covered before
they left the shop.

I will admit that the whole thing didn’t sound very scientific but most
people I have spoken to on the subject seem to think that it’s probably
quite close to the truth.

By whom? Sounds like a number simply picked out of the air. And for
comparison what is the cost of manufacture a top end samsung?

That's clearly not true. Even if your number above is close to true, it
won't be what phone providers are charged by Apple.

Still just an anecdote.

And very, very wrong.

This is 2017, but the parts cost is $370 for an iPhone X costing $999.
https://news.ihsmarkit.com/prviewer/release_only/slug/technology-iphone-x-costs-apple-370-materials-ihs-markit-teardown-reveals

The full breakdown:
https://mms.businesswire.com/media/20171108005056/en/622977/5/iPhoneX_cost_summary.jpg?download=1
The largest cost is the display which is $110 alone.

That doesn't include the cost of software, which is a major development
cost.

Unsurprisingly, the widespread predictions have come true ...

iPhone 15: Apple forced to ditch lightning charger
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-66778528

.... but also of interest to Apple users ...

France halts iPhone 12 sales over radiation levels
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-66795168

"France has ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 for emitting too
much electromagnetic radiation.

On Tuesday, the French watchdog which governs radio frequencies also
told the tech giant to fix existing phones.

The ANFR has advised Apple that if it cannot resolve the issue via a
software update, it must recall every iPhone 12 ever sold in the country.

But the World Health Organization has previously sought to allay fears
about radiation emitted by mobile phones.

It says on its website there is no evidence to conclude that exposure to
low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to humans.

The iPhone 12 was first released in September 2020, and it is still sold
worldwide.

Apple told the BBC it was contesting the ANFR's review, and said it had
provided the regulator with lab results from the tech giant itself and
third parties which show the device is compliant with all the relevant
rules.

[...]

The ANFR said the device's SAR was 5.74 watts per kilogram - above the
limit set by the European Union (EU) for a phone when it is held or kept
in a pocket.

It will share its findings with other regulators across the trading bloc."

Thankfully, I use a Samsung currently anyway, but it's a tablet which
originally I bought with phone functionality as a backup against my then
mobile phone dying, which happened a couple of years later. But this
tablet won't fit into the side pockets of my jeans, which is very
inconvenient, and new smartphones are now so large that I suspect they
wouldn't fit either, so I was considering trying to get a used or
refurbished mini iPhone, but was going to wait until USB-C models became
cheap enough to afford. I guess now I will have to consider how the
above issue unfolds as well.

If that's cost of parts, then around US$50 per unit just for assembly
sounds reasonable for a factory in China.

Not if Apple sell USB-C phones in the EU and phones with proprietary connectors in GB, enjoying the freedom they have here - at UK consumers expense, along with EU roaming charges, visa charges, customs hassles and taxes on personal imports etc.
