Our Air Source heat Pump was commissioned and started up at about 16:00
today, because it would seem to be obligatory for builders and plumbers to
work with as many windows and doors open as they can arrange - even when
the outside temperature is 1- 3 degrees C., the average ambient temperature
in the house was 13 degrees C. Within 3 hours, things were beginning to
feel far more comfortable. During the work, we were using a gas fire in
the living room and 2 fan heaters and a convection heater which were
consuming far more energy to partially warm the house than the maximum 2.2
kW/h that the heat pump consumes!

I’m happy to bore UMRATS to death if anyRats are interested - otherwise
I’ll just stay smug…

Warm front sounds too moderate to be terrorist. They'd be Burning
Front if more aggressive, surely?

You're thinking of The Weathermen, not to be confused with Weather Report.

That would be them being considerate builders showing concern for your
health and safety - or theirs. Ventilation is good for, despite the
government pretending it has gone away and many of the public
forgetting that it was ever there in the first place, the ONS has been
dutifully plugging away with the weekly Covid stats[1] which currently
are low-ish but rising.

My grasp on probability theory is feeble and my maths feebler yet but
my back-of-the-envelope scribbles suggest that, given the two of you
already in the house and assuming there are an additional four
builders/plumbers/electricians/whatever, given the current national
rate of infection, I think the probability that someone on your
premises at that time was infected is around 15%. Worth opening
windows for, IMO.

I did enquire of the apprentice ASHP installer if it was a company or maybe
personal requirement and he assured me it was neither.

Meanwhile, back at the heat pump front:
Whilst the lads were freezing our delicate bits whenever possible, we sat
in the sitting room with the door closed and a gas fire on half heat for
some hours each day. In the evenings, we endeavoured to warm a few rooms in
the house with 2 x 1-2 kW fan heaters and a convection heater nominally 2kW
worth. The gas fire plus the 4-5 kW of heating at least took the chill off
the rooms we were using. We are now heating the whole house to a
considerably higher ‘comfort level’ for approx 1 kW/h with the heat pump.
Solar energy charges the battery and some energy is then used in the heat
pump to extract more energy from the surrounding air and distribute it
around the house. I’m very pleased with the results so far but I am still
waiting and adjusting the flow temperature for an improved scop; there is
more adjustment and assessment to be done yet but so far I have reduced the
average consumption by some 50% I think. The installers think that to play
safe, one should have a flow temperature of 50 degrees C - I have this down
to 45 deg. and still have a little more heat than is necessary. Normal
practice is to have the flow temperature as low as possible commensurate
with the required comfort level required. We are running the system 24/7
and once we have the closest fit, will deploy thermostatic radiator valves
to control the maximum temperature in some rooms (bedroom at night
frinstance). The installers were rushing and despite saying they have
balanced the system, I know this not to be true as three radiators were
missing at the time!!!! So a little work yet to be done, but we are
progressing; I have even asked Octopus Energy to remove the redundant gas
meter, cap the gas main and stop charging a daily standing fee ASAP!

Heating? In a Bedroom?!?
G'Lord man what are you trying to do?

Everyone knows bedrooms should be unheated - with the windows wide open
so that the neighbours may all enjoy the rich sonorous tones of one's
'deep breathing'.

The Weathermen didn't have as good a bass player as Weather Report.
