The rain was so prevalent as to make any judgement of the different quality of the sides redundant.

However, what was striking is the ineptitude of modern players to play in conditions which gave the seam and swing bowlers help although nothing like as much as batsmen in the 1950s had to master with uncovered pitches and no pitch inspectors.

It was left to 45 years young Darren Stevens to show how to play in such conditions.

The consequence of the technical ineptitude was a raft of low scores and some spectacular collapses.
